Hi All, I've been a member for a while but have never posted. Normally I have found the answers to my questions searching forums.
I currently have a 2020 Mustang Gt I purchased new in 10/2021. I have had this tapping noise coming from the passenger side valve cover. I believe it's a lifter tap.
It's been going on for a long time. Since approx. mile 175 currently have approx. 3000 miles. Been to 2 different dealers several times with no definitive answers as to what it is. I've been told everything from the notorious Typewriter tick to piston slap. I am almost certain its neither. The last mechanic I talked to said he believes it is something hydraulic. He said that Ford would not waste the time to diagnose the problem and would more than likely do an engine swap.
So, I've attached a Mp4 file and would appreciate any opinions on what everyone thinks this may be.
This is my first post and apologies ahead of time if I have not posted this correctly.

Sounds like lifter tick. On my 2020, when the car first starts-up and I am in-between two parked vehicles, I have a similar sound that I can hear from inside the vehicle. Once the car warms-up and the idle drops, I no longer hear it, unless I pop-open the hood and listen carefully. I just attributed mine to the lack of oil / lubrication on a cold start-up.

On your car, does the sound become less audible as the car warms up? Some people on here have had success with Ceratec. They put a bottle in after every oil change.

Its probably NOT but, have you considered the throttle plate slapping? If you raise engine rpm does it stop?

Purely a thought

Thanks for the responses, the noise starts after the car idles down from a cold start, it will not go away after it warms up.
I did use ceratec and it helped a lot. But after my oil change the noise came right back.
The noise increases speed when you rev the motor and disappears under the sound of the motor on higher revs.
By the way the car is stock.

I'm going to add Ceratec again after the next oil change...but I think I'll do it while it's warm and slowly until the noise goes away. I don't think mine needed 2 bottles. It may be something you live with.

I did a quick search on here and found this:

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
5.0L - Engine Knock Type Noise At Idle
19-2144
09 May 2019

Model:

Ford
2018-2019 F-150
2018-2019 Mustang

Issue: Some 2018-2019 F-150 and Mustang vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit a light to moderate knocking type noise at idle (600-700 RPM) that is sometimes described as a quiet diesel type sound. The noise is usually more prominent on the passenger side of the vehicle toward the rear of the engine. As the engine comes up to operating temperature, the noise level increases slightly. This noise is not detrimental to engine function and has no short or long term effects on engine durability. This an operating characteristic of the 5.0L engine and no repairs should be attempted.

Action: Refer to the Service Procedure for vehicles that meet the following criteria:

• 2018-2019 F-150/Mustang

• 5.0L engine

• Light or moderate knocking type noise at idle

Try unplugging the imrc connector on top of the IM and see if it quiets down.

I've seen this also and was ruled out. This noise is from the front of the valve cover on the passenger side. Used a stethoscope to verify it.

Thanks, I'll give this a shot when I get a chance.

I did an oil change prior to the most recent one, at about 200 miles, using Penzoil Full synthetic and 1 bottle of Ceratec and the noise went away. I thought that the problem was solved. So to see if it was, at 3000 miles I had a free dealer oil change and they used Motorcraft Full synthetic, and the noise came back. I used some more Ceratec and now the noise is intermittent but still there. The service Manager seems to think it may be an oil pressure issue.
I have to say the Penzoil and Ceratec does make a big difference, but I am concerned that I may be just masking a problem. Not to mention the added expense of an oil change.
