Just want to drain and refill, but my last several attempts w/other cars have shown that only a gallon or so will come out that way. Could I let the car idle a few minutes in hopes the water pump would spit out more? It is best to hour the front end raised (ramps?) or the rear end up?

Here’s a link to a radiator swap, just to visualize where some of the parts are. This is a V8 but I imagine it’s similar. I would think raising the rear would help it to flow out the drain. You could also remove the lower mount to get whatever fluid is over there. When I replaced my radiator, I did not come close to draining all the fluid with the car level, maybe half came out.

Personally I wouldn’t idle the car to pump it out, seems like a bad idea to dry the pump out that way. But I’ve never done this myself either.

THANKS, hoping to hear more. Tried posting this in the maintenance section but got no hits! I may end up just backing it up on the ramps and draining all that comes out- add the new stuff and call it a day!

No simple drain and fill is going to get all of the old coolant out. You'll be lucky to get half.
If you want better than that then you're going to have to look into having the system flushed or getting the stuff and doing it yourself.

Think you are right, but being all aluminum and only 50K miles, Im thinking it just needs a drain, add a gallon of distilled water, run, drain again and then fill w/50/50 coolant or maybe a tad richer on the coolant as it would be slightly diluted some after adding a gallon of water............COMMENTS PLEASE

I have 2 different flush machines at work but i have disconnected the very top little 3/8 hose on top of the surge tank (reservoir) and extended it with a barb have it pump into used fluid tank and fill the reservoir as the car runs. It takes a while but it’s effective and no mess.
