Hard to shift into 1st gear from stop

FYI, it very well could be the transmission is bad. My car is currently at the Ford dealership going through dealership hell. The transmission started grinding going into first gear while rolling, then progressed to being difficult (sometimes) to put into first gear at a stop.

Dealership hell = They couldn't get Ford to approve a new transmission and were forced to repair the original. Well guess what? The repair failed and the transmission now grinds between 2nd & 3rd. Ford has finally agreed to replace the trans. The dealership has had my car going on 4 weeks.

The original diagnosis was that the 1st gear syncro was broken/damaged.
If there is any good news in this, the transmission is covered under the 5/50k drive train warranty.

Moral of the story, yes it's very possible that your transmission is defective. YMMV

When it happens you might try putting it into 2nd and then shifting up to first. Sort of a pain to have to do that though. I would suspect it's a shifter issue rather than in the transmission.

Recently I have had several instances of my car not shifting into first gear from a stop. Some details:

1. Car is a 2017 with 11k miles. Installed a MGW shifter about a year and half ago. Love it!
2. This issue usually happens when the car is warm/hot. Not on cold start.
3. Has happened after shifting out of reverse when manuevering in a parking lot.
4. No other shifter/transmission issues (smooth shifts, no other noises)

Thoughts?

Have you tried turning off the engine when this happened and then see if if will let you engage first gear?

I haven't had to turn it off, I usually cycle through it a few times and/or double clutch and it will go into gear. Just pisses off the people behind me that have to wait...

Did you ever fix the issue. Experiencing the exact same after a clutch install by the dealer

I had this same issue. The reverse lockout had moved. This would cause first gear to jam and not go in. It eventually got so bad that it would go into reverse. I took the boot off and adjusted the reverse lock out nut. After that problem solved. There is a video about how to adjust.

I had similar issue today. I was in a stop light, and when it was green I tried to engage first gear but it only allowed me to move the shifter to the left but not up. I tried few times, I depressed the clutch fully, nothing! Then I turned it off and then on, tried again and nothing. So, I engaged 2nd gear and move the car to a parking lot. I tried once it was stopped and 1st gear worked. I moved the shifter in all gears and it worked fine. I turned it off few times and tried and all was good. I was driving the car for 20 min before it happened. And I always let my car warm up before start driving. It only has 777 miles on it. Any thoughts? I have the original shifter, no aftermarket parts, my car is completely stock.

Sounds like a transmission issue. Maybe synchros? Not sure

I have a standard transmission and I have this issue from time to time as well. First gear is a little rough to get in. There were instances where I thought the car was in gear, but wasn't - made a cringeworthy khhhh noise.
When I posted that here, I was told by members that I wasn't alone, the transmission needed manhandling sometimes. It's not always, but half of the time, first gear needs some forcing. So, it might not be your short shifter, it might be the good ol Tremec.

As stated earlier, I too am sorry to hijack this thread but I am having the exact same issue with my 2018 as well. It's driving me nuts....
