Speaking solely from observation and research of those that have already paved the way...

If you're looking for performance, data seems to lean towards the H-pipe due to the increased back pressure. Take Holley's data on their Blackheart system for instance; they used an H-pipe and their data shows that there is more power and torque produced WITH the mufflers than without.

Now I know that isn't specifically pointing out that the H-pipe was the factor, but it does show that the 3.7 benefits from back pressure.

Therefore, one can only deduce that an H-pipe that allows each pulse to fight over balancing pressure would produce more power/torque over the whole band than an equally sized X-pipe that allows for more direct flow without resistance.

Of course if you're main concern is sound, then everything I just wrote is moot and you'll just have to listen to sound clips to make a preferential choice ;)

With all other things being equal an X pipe will produce more power than an H pipe. The reason being the exhaust pulses crossing in the X produces a savaging more effectively than an H. That is why the H pipe pretty much disappeared from the seen until recently.

Of course either a X or H need to be placed in the proper place to see any measurable power increase which is easier said than done. The old rule of thumb was to put a crayon stripe along the length of the pipe and where it stopped burning off is where you wanted your cross over. Most cars these days you can't put the cross over where it needs to be so the choice of X or H is only a sound preference thing.

I went for an x-pipe because it just sounds better IMO. You are not going to gain much, from either and x or h pipe, and if you do, you won't notice it.

I like the x because it has a smoother, more exotic sound. H sounds to choppy and rough to me

My brother and I were reading about this because he has a GT and he was in the market for an exhaust. From what we understood there is not really a difference when it comes to performance. It comes down to sound. The H pipe is deeper and not raspy (like the 60s and 70s Mustangs). The X is more raspy and modern you can say and maybe that explains why most exhausts come with an X pipe these days. So it's personal preference. My brother and I prefer the H-pipe for that classic muscle car sound on the GT. He ended up getting ARH catback with an H-pipe and it sounds amazing!!!

H pipes do sound good on 8s but so do x's....really just a personal preference like you said. My dad put a x on his 95 5.0 that used to have a h, and while its not as loud with the x, it has a more refined sound. I like the x on the 6 because it sounds more like a exotic type car with the higher pitch. Whatever you do....dont believe that bs when people say this is a even fire motor and doesnt need a cross over or balance pipe..i tried split pipes and it sounded so bad, that i litterally drove it for 5 min and removed it. Down on power....and just sounded horrible
