Guide lines in the camera

In trying to reverse close to a cerb I have scraped the 19 inch black wheels against the curb 3 times. Withe low profile tires the wheels extend to the side more than the tires. The lage tires of an SUV protects the wheels from hitting the curb. Maybe I am not using the camera guide lines correctly. There are different guiding lines, with different colors. Any suggestions?

Just use your side mirrors like you would an older car. If it's happened 3 times while using the camera, it may be time to use the mirror.

And as far as tires, the premium versions 18inch wheels have a bigger side wall and seems to protect the lip of the wheel pretty good.

Yea those lines are just there as a guide, they aren't showing you exactly where each part of the car is. I'd assume those are centered on your vehicle most likely. I use that along with the mirrors to see where I'm going. I'm sure if you did that a few times and noted where the guide lines were at compared to your car you could get good enough to use only the camera. However, its a bad habit to get into using only one source when navigating. Most people used mirrors along with actually turning around to check the environment where the mirrors didn't show before cameras. Always use more than one source of data when available!

Don't pay attention to the white guide lines. And make sure you have a clear space in between your parking lines and the red, green, yellow lines in the camera.

The camera guidelines are only good for what you're directly backing up toward. Useless for what's beside the car.

As said already, use your outside mirrors (tip them down) and learn to trust yourself and your own "feel" for where the sides of the car and the wheels are relative to things like curbs and the lines in parking spaces. Don't give the camera too much credit - it's at best a guide, not a magic guarantee of backing-up success or a replacement for judgment.

I find that looking down into the dash on my daughter's car (that does have a backup camera) works directly against my own perception of where things are. It's not a direction that feels right to be looking in while the car is moving, and we're talking real life situations here, not a video game where the car never stays hurt for long.

The ONE time I tried using the camera to parallel park I oh so lightly touched the car behind me because I was focusing too much on the stupid screen to where I couldn't have a good feel how far or fast I was backing up. Luckily there was no damage but I was still disgusted in myself, I have never in my life tapped someone while parallel parking.

That was the first and last time using the camera. ZERO incidents after forgetting about the stupid gimmick camera. Zero wheel scrubs.

Just get more acquainted with the dimension/turning radius of your car and forget about the camera.

Also give yourself some room at the curb, I always see people parking with the tire within an inch of the curb. The law is like 18 inches bros...

The camera is a handy tool, particularly at night or in a parking garage. My rule of thumb is six inches of leeway. Like all the others have said, the mirrors are your friends, always double check. One guy here had a great idea for those with memory seats. He set position three so the mirror would pick up the curbs when backing up. Genius!

The lines on my 16's rear camera represent the sides of my car. Knowing that, I've had no problems pulling up to curbs or parallel parking.

I can also clearly see how close I am to objects behind me using the visible part of my bumper and the yellow and red sections as guides.

Is it really that hard? Geez.

use a bit of liquid paper or white out and draw the lines a bit wider!

I dont have a picture, but i put those 1 inch convex blind spot mirrors over the ones installed already on the mirrors. Just angled them downward so i can get a good look at any curbs while parking. I got the black ones and they blend right into the mirrors. Plus i can still see anyone in my blind spot

Apparently not closely enough for all people in all situations, and I wouldn't trust its virtual perspective that closely either. Word to the wise - be a little extra careful if you ever install wheels that are wider or with significantly lower offset.

I can also clearly see how close I am to objects behind me using the visible part of my bumper and the yellow and red sections as guides.

That's not where the risk of getting your wheels scraped lies.
