Maybe! Either way you would have to really force it into gear because at that speed there is no way in hell it would have just dropped in. That moment of resistance is when the driver should have realized he was trying the wrong gear and should have applied a heavy dose of brakes then downshift. Or just ride the turn in 4th.
Actually, it slides into 3rd gear just fine at that speed. Must have great syncro's.
Been there....but caught it very quickly

Now I'm very deliberate on pushing hard right and up to hit 5th. Maybe the new shifters out there help avoid this. If so, its going on my list.

I was there this past weekend. Didn't see this live, but heard the scuttlebutt after the fact.
I always shift from 4th to 5th on the front straight, normally just before the start/finish line as I'm hitting the limits of 4th gear. Then scream in 5th gear until the turn in point. Downshift to 4th after coming off the banking.
Have to be very deliberate going from 4th to 5th to not catch 3rd by accident. I have nearly done that a few times and feather the clutch a bit to make sure its 5th and not 3rd cause it gets real exciting if you catch 3rd by mistake.
He left the track before we could talk to him, but maybe he caught 3rd gear by accident....
What he said, you can hit 5th gear on the TWS front straight for sure, it might not be the way you drive but it certainly is a valid action. I'm guessing just a newbie and got tripped up as turn 1 can be intimidating until you spend some time at that track getting used to the setup and pitch in for that corner. If you don't set it up right it gets scary fast (at least for me on both 4 and 2 wheels but I'm no pro but a long shot)

Just curious...does track insurance cover something like this, personal insurance with comprehensive coverage, or do you have to eat it?

Depends a lot on your insurance and if you were racing for time/against other drivers or not. 99% of the time racing for time/against other drivers will not be covered but taking car on track to improve skills etc can be.

I briefly looked into track insurance, and the ones that I saw, no one covers you blowing your motor/transmission. If the motor/transmission was compromised due to crashing the car, then yes. But no coverage for money shifts. Looks like the owner will foot the entire bill for this one.
