I just thought of something. Does the 2016 Camaro have an aluminum diff housing?

I've done some searching, but I can't find an answer. The fifth gen SS had an aluminum diff housing though. They're probably putting one in the new model since weight savings was such a big deal. The Mustang has a cast iron housing in the manual transmission V8 cars to deal with shock more, but there's an aluminum one in the automatic Mustangs. Guess the weight difference in the two housings…

Give up? It's 40lbs. If the manual 2016 Camaro has an aluminum diff housing, then that's the only reason that it's lighter than the Mustang. Weight loss versus strength, and Ford opted for strength.

It will be interesting to see if the stock automatic cars weigh the same since this is likely the difference in the two manual cars.

Are you saying the diff in the stick mustang is cast iron and aluminum diff in the automatic? Because both the stick and autos use the same housings in the mustangs.

They don't. Check into it. Manual Mustangs, at least the V8 models, have a cast iron diff housing. Autos have aluminum.

You are incorrect.
So - I made the long haul to NMRA Bowling Green a few weeks back.

While I set my new PB, it was a nightmare. I broke on my very first pass, while going 9.6@144~

First pass to a 9.6@144~ Broke my aluminum Diff immediately on the launch.

Video from my FB:

After this pass, I got super lucky and found a cast iron diff at the track. Yeah, what are the odds?

So, I talked to my tuner Ken and he said I needed to take my 3.15 gears out of my aluminum, and swap them into the cast iron housing. Power By The Hour happened to be at the track - and boy did they come to the rescue. Those guys helped me tremendously! They were like a damn robotic team...working in unison...it was sweet.

All buttoned up at about 10PM...took it out to dinner, back to the hotel, then back to the track in the morning to make more passes.

What could possibly fail next? Welp...the very next pass after breaking the diff, I shattered my aluminum DS. In all fairness, I am 100% confident that this happened because I damaged it on the previous pass. (the previous pass caused a bunch of damage under the car - thank god I had our DS Loop!)

***Good thing I had our DS Loop on the car I would say!

Thanks to Beefcake, I had a stock DS Delivered the next morning and spent a few hungover hours installing it - just in time for my race against Watson (great).

Well, it was suppose to work out in my favor against Watson, because I was to race them in True Street. Well, after the cruise...they sat us parked for hours, enough time for their beast to cool down and set the world on fire. LOL!

I was very nervous about running now....and had my tuner pull a bunch of timing out of the launch, so I could atleast get the car down the track without breaking.

How about a 1.57 sixty...."all out" on the throttle, compared to a 1.40 sixty, breaking parts.

Still...Watson crushed me and running 9.70s sucks. I am happy with the trap speed though. Little TVS doing work!

Here are my slips for the weekend. 4 full days, 3 passes, all junk!

He is saying if it is a V8 car with a manual transmission, it has a cast iron housing. This article says all manuals have cast iron. And its only 24 pounds heavier

http://blog.caranddriver.com/2015-f...-know-about-its-v-6-v-8-and-ecoboost-engines/

I wasn't sure if the other manuals had cast iron or not. I wasn't saying that they didn't, just that I knew the V8 cars had them.

I don't know what info they were sourcing in that article, but Kelly weighed them back to back when he did the swap. The difference was right at 40lbs.

There is alot of components that the Camaro has that are comprised of aluminum versus steel or iron found in the Mustang. A notable portion of the the Camaro's front suspension is aluminum. However the rear dif is cast iron.

I am looking to get an auto diff housing for my car. If someone wants a iron one.

I wanted to correct myself. After 65Terdlingua posted that article, I wanted to double check my memory. Kelly weighed several components at once when he saw the 40lb. difference in the rear assembly. I found someone else that weighed just the housings, and that was only a 23lb. difference. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

I apologize. I stand corrected. Sorry
