No, there are not specific RPMs to rev-match at. There are RPM differences between gears. You can rev-match a down shift at the redline, or at 2200 RPMs, almost anywhere in the rev-range.

Engine braking is hard on the trans, so go ahead if you have the $$ to replace it. Pads and rotors are significantly cheaper, and made specifically for slowing/stopping the car......which your trans in not.
Engine braking, if done right, does no damage to the transmission.

You heel-toe on the street? All you're doing is causing exess wear on the clutch, synchros, pistons, clutch pedal bearings, etc... While true this is a gross exaggeration and not a concern, but many people like to blow things out of proportion on this thread so why not?

It's great to see people practicing heel tie on the street. Don't let it become a lost art!
He isn't heal-toe'ing. He's simply rev-matching when he's downshifting.

Seriously, I've been taught to be in the right gear at ALL times. How are you guys simply coasting in neutral (which is illegal in Canada, btw) when you're approaching a stop light? What if the light changes, then what? Do you then shift the transmission from neutral to 2nd or 3rd? Well if you don't rev-match then you're hurting your transmission and causing excess wear.

What if you want to avoid something? Being in neutral won't allow that.

I'm surprised at some posters who are happy to coast in neutral. Well that's not proper driving. :headbonk::eyebulge:
