I'm not sure if anyone on here has had a chance to sit in the interior of the new Mustang (I know the ones at a lot of auto shows have been "locked for our safety"), but I was able to sit in a new GT Premium briefly at an employee event and I figured I'd share my impressions. Just note that there were still some pre-production stuff on it, but the interior was 90% ready from what I could tell.

  • Seats - This model had the premium heated/cooled seats in chestnut/saddle leather and were very nice in my opinion. The leather was pretty soft and the seats were nice and cushioned. They did a good job of hugging you without being to annoying and were just so comfortable.
  • Toggles/Buttons - I finally got to try the toggles in person (obviously with the engine off) and I'd say I was a bit disappointed in the functionality. I had previously expected the toggles to be more like a switch where it stayed in position, but they were more like rocker switches where you clicked the toggle up to change the setting instead of having 4 positions for each setting. The toggle material felt nice, but it could use more feedback to let you know you've changed the setting. The buttons felt "clicky" enough and I liked the feel of the ones on the center console.
  • Visibility - The visibility was good in the front and so-so in the rear, but better than what I've seen in other sportier cars. You can check your blind spots, but it may take a little more neck turning given the size of the rear pillars. The front is easy to see like the current gen.
  • Ergonomics - The interior layout is above average in terms of ergonomics. Most everything was easy to reach and operate. The one thing that may present a problem (as many of you have pointed out) is the steering wheel controls mounted under the main spokes (for phone functions I think) - they're not very easy to use if you want to keep your hands on the wheel.
  • Shifter - The shifter throw felt good, definitely improved from the current gen. The shifter height is a little short, but shifting isn't a far reach or strenuous activity.

Just remember that these observations come from a brief time spent in the interior and may change in final production. I just wanted to share my impressions.

Thx for posting, good write up. Nothing wrong with honesty, I haven't even seen one yet in person but ordered one.

Is anyone else excited to have a dead pedal again?

Trogdor!! LOL, LOVE the username! Homestar would be proud.

1 question about the toggles. After watching the video posted today by SVT Performance, I'm wondering if you need the stereo screen to see what's going on with them. It seemed like in the video, changing modes showed something on a screen for feedback of what's going on.

I fully expected them to be rocker switches that re-center themselves and not stay in a certain position. Personally, I think that is a better approach for the longevity of the toggles themselves.

Oh, two more questions. Did it have the 68B Premier Trim package, by chance? I'm curious about any color additions to the seats (like the current model) to match the exterior color. And I know a lot are curious about the dash still. Was it brushed or turned aluminum?

Did you get hands-on experience with the major touch points? I'm curious to know how the materials feel around the IP and center console, as well as the door inserts. Thanks for the write-up!

I'm not sure what package it had on the interior, but it did have the turned aluminum panel (with all the little circle-like patterns). I really liked the look of it as did another employee. It had the chestnut/saddle seats with an Ingot silver exterior. I think it also had the performance package given the wheels.

Unfortunately the car was turned off with no key, but I did get to touch/fiddle with most of the interior components. With respect to the door inserts, there wasn't as much padding as I was hoping, but the material itself felt pretty soft and smooth. I did not feel the leather wrapping stuff around the center console area, but the plastics and materials used on the center console itself were acceptable. They had a more "grippy", matte feel instead of the slippery plastics used in other cars. The instrument panel looked good from what I could see with nice and clear clusters and layout.

From what I gathered, the changes would need to be seen on the screen or instrument cluster given there's no visual cues on the toggles themselves to let you know what mode they're in.

This is called jeweling, and is a common bit of decorative machining, esp. with guns.

I'm liking the jeweling more the more I see it. Really looking forward to seeing it from inside the cockpit, in person.

Is it October yet?

I've yet to see one in person as well, and hearing these reviews isn't helping me at all.

I wasn't too impressed with the turned looked at first either, hoping for the brushed aluminum. But the more I see it, the less it bothers me. Which I suppose is a good thing because of the order I placed.

I thought the toggles would be like switches too, that is disappointing. Driving fast tactile feedback is always appreciated over having to watch a screen!

After the fun first couple of days playing around with settings, for me, it'll just be set to what I like and forgot about except for rare occasions. I hope it remembers the settings and you don't have to reset them.

I got a chance to sit in it to and I'd agree. It was the comp orange Ecoboost with leather recoro's. It's amazing, a great step up from the S197's. The only part that really bothered me was the center console, it's not like I'm always touching it but it could be better. Again though, not final production so you never know. As always, the Recaro's are awesome and the materials used feel great. Overall I'm very impressed.
