Advice please.

I wanna get a go pro for the NC500 trip but there seems to be lots of versions from 100 to 400 quid and I dont iknow what to buy.

So, what I want is this.

A camera that I can mount inside and outside the car in various locations.
I want to run the camera as long as possible and download the footage to my laptop daily.

I dont need broadcast quality but I want it to be clear if possible.

I want sound and if possible to reduce wind noise, I want to hear my exhaust when mounted at the back and the engine when at the front.

Thats about it really. What should I get

I was going through this a few months ago...

I wrote off the cheapest and most expensive ones and got it down to 2 in the end, can't remember the name of the one i didnt get.

i went for a GoPro hero 4 Silver, think it was about ÂŁ280.

Main reasons being, the case that protects it can be removed so batteries can be swapped instead of just recharging, carrying spares is a godsend, only lasts a couple of hours on record.

Footage is brilliant and sound is too.

I think there are "3" versions as opposed to "4" which are just the last model, probably does just as good but slightly cheaper.

Hope that was some help at least!

Also I recommend the official mounts. Especially the suction mount. Yes it's expensive but it has never failed. Think the go pro suction mount is rated to 200mph?

We have a hero 4 silver. Great bit of kit. Get a extra battery too as they don't seem to last as long as you would hope

As an alternative that us a fraction of the cost, look into the SJCAM 4000 or SJCAM 5000. Same form factor and can use GoPro mounts.

My friend has these, he got it for ÂŁ58 quid, had an LCD screen on it and came with LOADS of accessories. (SJ4000).

And yes, can use go pro mounts etc, might save you a bit of cash if you're planning to record say Dashcam, exhaust rear and say side skirts/wheels (3 cameras, at the price of 1 Go Pro)

The Go pro hero 4 blacks have the smallest form factor, small, and black, but they're also an INCREDIBLE little piece of kit. They record up to 4k video!

Go Pros with an app can be synced to your phone, so that's always fun to do, allows you to start/stop recording and/or focus in on separate positions.

I think go Pro's audio quality is horse sh1te. A lot of these professional videos of car's exhausts, use a mic by the exhaust to capture it's sound, a go-pro's will just muffle and distorte the sound and make it sound pants.

I hope this helps somewhat!

Bloody hell! Now I am in information overload!

Half the reason I never buy anything is when I do the research I just end up all confused and get nothing.

It was so much easier parting with 35k for a Mustang than it is a few hundred on a go pro.

And dont even get me started on a freaking SLR!

Go Pro Silver would be my recommendation. Yes you pay more for the name, but I trust it fully.

Took one this time last year on R66 and it survived 4 weeks of various in and out of car activities - dropped, dragged, thrown, stolen (animal) etc.

Get the suction cup attachment and mount it in car. A couple extra ones will not go a miss for external shots etc also. It takes a 64gb card and you can dump onto a laptop with external hard-drive easy enough each night.

We did a time-lapse mode all along R66 and pacific highway. It took me an age to edit the footage, run music and captions etc but worth it in the end as a pet project.

Someone buy a drone as well and have the thing follow you on the NC500, that'll get some crazy shots! (Right, that's more just to give Steve something else to look at lol!)

To shortly answer your questions, if you have even minor editing experience (Aka can drag and drop a sound clip and a video clip together)
Buy a wireless mic, add a 'fuzzy' (reduces wind noise to virtually 0 - may also be called furry covers etc, google it you'll see) use some 3m tape and stick it above your exhaust. As Go pro sound I've found is AWFUL. But their video recording is AMAZING.

You want one that's going to do 1080p (HD) as a minimum, if you can get one that records at 60FPS (Frames per second) you're going to be in the money, 4k is currently pointless as manjority don't have 4k output screens etc.

Kristian has a SLR or DSLR, so get him to do your professional pictures, still waiting for him to send me the 100 he took from the Midlands meet.... cough cough Kristian87

A lot of people get wrapped up in the resolution. If you only plan on sharing online, 1080 is more than enough. If you're making movies for your big screen, 4k is great but you better upgrade your computer to do the editing. ;)

Can't agree more. For less than $30US you can get an external mic setup for good sound. This is a GoPro Hero 3+ @ 1080p with an external mic behind the rear bumper:
