Scientists dismissed Covid lab leak theory ‘as they feared ban on high-risk experiments’ (yahoo.com)

"Scientists dismissed the Covid-19 lab leak theory because they wanted to continue doing dangerous “gain-of-function” experiments to make viruses more deadly, a University of Oxford scholar has claimed.

Anton van der Merwe, a professor of molecular immunology, said that scientists involved in similar work as the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the laboratory implicated in the lab leak, were worried that a ban would be reimposed on such testing."
........

"Writing in the letters page of the Financial Times, he said: “The conflict arises from the fact the researchers perform, and want to continue to perform, precisely the sorts of experiment that make a laboratory leak much more likely."

“These include gain-of-function experiments, where they investigate whether they can enable, by genetic modification, an animal virus to infect human cells"
..........

“What is more likely is that these organisms will infect those doing the experiments, who could unwittingly spread the virus to the community, and possibly the whole world.”

Prof van der Merwe said there was “little justification for doing such experiments, except scientific curiosity and the desire for prestige”.

.........

"It’s pathetic,” he told The Telegraph. “You have this unholy and unethical alliance of scientists working together through highly influential publications effectively to kibosh what may be a scientific truth, and get it pushed into the realms of conspiracy theory."

“We need to be asking tough questions about the origins, otherwise who knows what virus will be released next through incompetence and ambition and how many more millions it will be killing."

........

Dr Robert Redfield, a virologist who led the CDC at the beginning of the pandemic, said: “I still believe today that the data indicates that the outbreak of Covid 19 was more likely the result of a lab leak than as a result of a natural spillover event.”
........
"The Telegraph also revealed this week that Matt Hancock, the former health secretary, believed a natural origin “didn’t fly”, but was told to water down remarks in his memoir by the cabinet office, for fear of upsetting China."
:facepalm: :facepalm::facepalm:
Seems no one wants to upset China. I could care less. 😂 The way I look at it the more upset they are the better we are off.

Make your mind up!

You don't care but the more upset 'they' are the better - can't have it both ways.

Facts not opinions are more important

That's about the dumbest thing I've heard.

Whichever of those drive action is the MOST important. Pretty much all the resent and current messes are due to people with wrong opinions and blinders on to the facts calling the shots.

So maybe we should let facts drive action, rather than opinion.
I agree.
I can’t wait to live in this theoretical world where science dictates our course of action.
Unfortunately, the opinions people won’t like it much.

I'm not sure if you misunderstand me. Opinion is worthless without facts and evidence. An uninformed opinion is a total waste of space.

I think we are saying the same thing?

Hello; There are facts and opinions to be sure. However, another key term is interpretation. It would be great if we all could have a base set of facts to work with. Starting with good facts would be a more ideal way to go about working out challenging situations.
Of the three, opinion is the lesser. We all likely have heard the old saw about opinions and A-holes. One thing i have noted is a tendency by some to label as opinion what is actually a different interpretation of the available facts.

An example may help. There are sets of facts surrounding the capacity of electrical power generation systems and also about the understood massive increase in demand for electric power if the EV agenda goes forward. My take (interpretation) is the combined anti-fossil fuel agenda combined with the pro-EV agenda will result in a power grid system not able to meet demand. To dismiss that take as mere opinion is not realistic. I recently posted a link with resource consumption estimates for only one small country (UK) That estimated that to build all the wind generators and batteries needed to have green power and only EV's would require all the earths production of some resources for periods of years. Not a mere an easily dismissed opinion, but a valid interpretation of understood facts.

On the contrary - I always provide links to data and evidence to back up my opinion - you rarely do. No irony!
No, I provide links, but you dismiss mine and anyone who doesn’t look at things your way as propaganda. See we won’t see eye to eye even when I’ve tried to give an olive branch, given you a just due, you slap it out of my hand, explaining away that your views links and opinions garner more weight, then anyone else on this thread opposite your ideology. But I’ve seen bigger men with larger egos fall. They all do. Heck even Satan fell and he was the most beautiful and smartest of Gods creations. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Propaganda ! :cwl: :cwl: :cwl:

Olive branches?? No idea what you are on about.

My posted links are what they are, no 'ideologies' here. If you don't like the links come up with a counter argument with data rather than just ignoring and moving on to something else. For example just above you seem to have completely ignored all of the data links on China, just posted some half baked 'I don't care but the more upset they are the better'! Do you accept what was posted about Chinese EV sales and car companies?

No ego here - more than happy for you to prove me wrong - of course that does require proof and evidence, not just an opinion!

Again the links that contradict your views and ideology are rebuffed by you. You have no ability to see things in any other way than from your point of view. 👍🏼 It’s impossible to try and have a blind man explain to you what a cloud looks like if he’s never seen one. But he has an excuse. It’s more impossible to agree with a man on the color of the sky if he’s unwilling to open his eyes to look at it. That man has no excuse but his pride.

Words but no substance.

Still no answer about China and EV's!

Come on here is your chance... Provide evidence to contradict what I said, I'm waiting

Hello; A quote from me. "Hello; Yes the story seems to be that China is building and selling Green equipment and now EV's to the world while using coal and oil to power their economy to do so."

Top 5 Environmental Issues in China in 2023 | Earth.Org

" According to the 2021 World Air Quality Report, out of 1,374 cities located in East Asia, 143 (or about 11%) recorded annual average PM2.5 concentrations that are seven times greater than World Health Organization (WHO) standards. All of them were located in China, with the town of Hotan in southwestern Xinjiang experiencing the highest level of pollution in the country at about 101 µg/m³, over 20 times the WHO guideline value.

Estimated to cause an average of 1.2 million premature deaths every year, China’s poor air quality is primarily attributed to the rapid economic expansion the country experienced since 1979, which resulted in a drastic increase in coal-powered industrial production and electricity demand, as well as an exponential rise in private vehicles. It is estimated that roughly 48% of Chinese CO2 emissions come from the industrial sector, with 40% from the power – mainly coal – and 8% from the transport industry. With an ever-increasing population, the demand for electricity has grown with no respite, leading to even more coal-burning and worsened air standards."
........

"Furthermore, despite pledging to reach net zero emissions before 2060, the country remains by far the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, which alone covers 60% of its electricity demand. In an effort to restore the economy to pre-pandemic levels and curb the energy crisis sparked by the exponential rise in industrial activities the country experienced in 2021, the Chinese government ordered factories to increase their production capacity and built more than triple the amount of new coal power capacity as the rest of the world combined. Unsurprisingly, CO2 emissions in the same year almost reached 12 billion tonnes, accounting for 33% of the global total."
..........

"
High on the list of environmental issues in China is water pollution. As much as 90% of the country’s groundwater is contaminated by toxic human and industrial waste dumping, as well as farm fertilisers, causing about 70% of rivers and lakes to be unsafe for human use. Nearly half of the population does not have access to water that is safe for human consumption, while two-thirds of the rural population has to rely on tainted water due to a lack of adequate systems to treat wastewater."
