What's the point of this vs spending little bit more and getting actual racing cams? I understand the sound and lower price, but can't it lead to more damage than it's worth in the long run ? Not knocking it just curious.

If you have cats it can potentially damage them. Other than that there isn't any harm besides wasting gas at idle. Locking the cams to one position loses all the benefits of having VCT.
Basically taking a smart engine and making it dumb.
Great for pure racing where efficiency at idle/cruise doesn't matter. Locked cams have an rpm range where they make the most power and are the most efficient.
Theoretically VCT has the entire rpm range where it can be optimal for whatever application you apply to it.
Unless your car is a pure race car there's no reason to get rid of VCT.

The whole point of VCT is to mimic mid range power and high rpm power like a larger cam can do all while retaining a smooth idle and good MPG. It's the best of all worlds. That's why when people boost their coyotes there's no need to have "turbo cams". Stock cams and VCT do it all.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a ghost cam tune. Won’t hurt anything. They just sat the cams different at idle. No benefit to it either except the lie of having cams. Aftermarket cam are not a little bit more. They are a $3000 investment or more not including everything else you should do while you’re in there.. then after you do cams it still won’t lope like a cammed car unless you lockout the cams and that’s a hole other commitment. Iif you hear a newer mustang loping at a light there absolutely no intimidation. Just someone wanting to give the impression that they are something they are not. Show them what a real mustang can do
