I spent the majority of my career helping develop automatic transmissions and I still prefer rowing my own gears, definitely slower than any modern automatic but it's the fun factor (while I'm still healthy enough to enjoy three pedals.) Spend plenty of time behind the wheel of whatever automatic you're considering so you can make informed decisions. Ford's 10R family of transmission calibrations are ridiculously busy and, even though GM went their own way on their simpler valve bodies and 10L calibrations, they're still busy. ZF's 8HP family of transmissions are great units (better than GM's 8-speed attempt) and possibly the sweet spot for conventional automatics. Performance dual-clutch options are also pretty good but expensive to produce and the vehicles using them are also expensive. Good luck when the time comes to convert to two pedals.so thinking about getting an automatic something, although it may be just as excuse to trade cars!
