Background: I am planning to swap a coyote into my 93 GT. I have a rebuilt Gen 2 truck long block, from oil pan to heads, no accessories. I got the engine from someone on my local Fox Body group, the story is the engine was rebuilt by Ford and raffled off to employees. The employee who won it didn't need it so they sold it to this group member. The group member took the engine to a well known engine builder in the area who verified it was rebuilt. The engine and all components look brand new although I have not been able to fully verify all the components used.
Goal and Use For Engine: Plan is to keep the engine NA for now, 400-500hp is plenty, BUT I do want to rev the crap out of this thing. If I have one goal it's to be able to rev this thing to 8k rpm no problem. The car is a weekend warrior and will see very little miles.
Build Plan: Currently the engine is on an engine stand. the advice I received from a few people and even PBH was to just leave the motor alone, it's good as is. But I can't leave anything alone. I am going to replace the Oil pump gear, and cams. Here are parts I already have that are going to be installed:
-Boundary OPG
-MMR Crank Sprocket
-Mustang Gen 2 Cams x4
-Mustang Exhaust Phasers
Question: I am a person who says "while I'm in here, I might as well". I am not on an unlimited budget but none of these items are really out of my price range so I'm trying to figure out how deep I want to go into this, while I'm in there. I am going to list a few items and I was wondering what your guys opinion is on these and if I should do them. Let's forget about if it's worth it for the money. My main question is will the engine actually benefit from these things or am I creating more headaches for myself?
1. Boss 302 tensioners - The engine currently has stock Melling style tensioners, though they are new. Should I upgrade to the Boss 302 tensioner kit?
2. MMR Secondary Tensioner Bracket - I understand their reasoning for this part, but I also know plenty of people don't use this and make tons of power. Will this actually help my engine and should I do it? From what I understand I would need to use MMR's expensive secondary tensioners with this bracket.
3. MMR Billet Tensioner Guides - I know I don't need these for the power level I am making, they are expensive but look cool, any real benefit to these or am I reaching a new level of absurdity?
These last two I've basically decided I'm not doing but just want an opinion:
4. Upgraded Valve Springs - From what I understand the Gen 2 stock valve springs are great and can handle 8k rpm no problem. The only thing making me wonder is that right now would be the best time to do them if I am going to.
5. GT350 Timing Chains - The timing chains on the engine are new, but I'm assuming just factory replacements. I've heard people say to do the GT350 chains, yay or nay?
I imagine most of the answers I will get will be that I'm crazy and should just leave it alone. But I don't mind upgrading this engine, it's part of the fun for me, I want it to be solid and strong. That being said I'm leaning away from doing any of these because the engine is 0 miles with new parts. The Boss 302 tensioners seem like a good upgrade for the price so maybe I'll get those. Thanks for entertaining me.
