Anyone who ordered a lightning to use as a real truck for towing is in for some bad days.

Fixed that for you. Like every other vehicle buy what need. The Lightning, much like a GT500, is not for everyone.

Anyone else see the announcement of the Raptor R?
Yep, a mere $109K base. :cwl: And you can bet the markups will be equally stupid.

Who is buying this stuff?

Have you seen the cars many members of this forum have. Let's be real, there are a lot of folks on these forums that have the means to buy these vehicles. Just because you own a Mustang doesn't mean you do not have money.

Oh, I have. And I get it.

But let's be real, I'm betting the build quality of this new beast is no better than that of my '19 F150, which is frankly atrocious at less than half the price of the Raptor.

Hello; I doubt your "fix" will actually apply to other real truck use. That test may have been for towing, but my guess is put the same heavy load in the bed of the trucks and the results will be very similar.
The EV pickup starts with a heavy battery pack for one thing. To be clear i have not read much about the EV Ford pickup so cannot say for sure. I do not know the capacities and ranges under load.
My pickup is 18 years old. My guess is close to 95% of my trips are local, within 50 miles. A small percentage of 200 or 300 miles. I did need to tow a trailer with a load in the bed and on the trailer for half the trip of about 900 miles once. I did tow a VW Jetta about 80 miles one time. So almost every day I could virtue signal in an EV pickup if I wished. I would be in a bind every now and then when I really needed a working truck.

It’s up to the buyer to know what’s best for them. No different than anything else. Determine the range based on load, towing, etc. if it meets your needs, then you are ok to go. My buddy uses his truck for his landscaping business. 50/75 miles a day max. Has a trailer and loads up the bed pretty good. The Lightning would be perfect for him.

A 2014 EV Focus is a piece of crap - not a good representative of EVs. Anyways, battery warranties are 8-10 years or more so this won't be an issue for new purchases
Hello; Wonder if there is a way to tell if about six months before the warranty expires someone buggers the battery. To be clear I do not know how such would be done. Also would not be surprised to learn there are tattle-tale programs to trip someone up. The EV's may not be up to snuff yet in terms of overall performance, but my guess is the companies will not just throw in a 15 to 25K battery pack without doing some checking.

One other question. Is the battery replacement warranty a full cost right up to the end of the warranty time? Is it prorated like a regular battery?

The trailer in the test was empty, so load it and watch the range fall even further.
Bottom line if you need to tow and the range is inadequate then this isn’t the vehicle for you. Considering you can’t order one for 2022 I’m betting a lot of folks think it will be just fine.

That might be max range with a loaded trailer and bed.

Hello; I do get the match the tool for the job idea. I do that sort of thing often. Back when I have looked for a new truck or full-sized van, the capacity to tow or haul was a main thing. I even weighed 4x4 vs 2x4 and have run both. I never once had to figure out what a limited range might do to my buying.
I like to drive a full-sized van (see my avatar. They are better in most ways that three. One is a tall object may not fit in a van. Another is it is harder to find a 4x4 van. Not impossible but harder. last is a smelly cargo.

Seems we are on similar pages in this particular EV pickup discussion. An EV pickup will not fit my lifestyle 100% of the time. If they are more expensive to buy than an ICE is a factor. My 18 year old pickup with 63,000 miles would likely have needed a new battery pack by now at some very high cost. I think I am ahead paying more for gasoline.

Are we agreed that the EV is not really a "real" truck in the traditional sense and is only good for a very limited number of people for whom the needs match the EV?

By the way that report did not indicate how the Lightning was equipped. Did it have the extended-range battery and Max Trailer Tow package? If it didn’t the test was hardly fair. Just looked like a good excuse to post a negative video on one of the hottest vehicles of the year.

It is a real truck if you do not need a payload of more than 2235 lbs and/or towing more than 10,000 lbs. In all honesty who many regular F150 owners do you really think do this. Also based on the fact that they sold out the first year’s production I’d say the number is hardly limited. This truck is going to be a huge success. Just like the Mach-E already is.
