You can borrow compressors for free form most parts stores.

I'm not sure why you'd do it any other way. The amount of pressure on the springs is scary even with the correct tools.

We used to do it all the time, but on cars that weigh half of what these porkers weigh. I wouldn't try it. Get compressors.

When I was switching to the Koni Yellows on my car, I accidentally (don't ask) removed the center nut holding the strut in place. I could not get everything back together. THANKFULLY, I had a floor jack in place to keep the strut from moving. I was able to get everything apart without the violent explosion many fear, but it was WAY TOO MUCH work.

It took me about 30 minutes with a spring compressor to get everything back together and the other side done in another 2 hours taking my time.

+1 on getting the A-frame clamshell type. i'm a total rookie but i found the job impossible w/ BMR springs w/ the typical rod type compressor. After hours of trying, i put the stock spring back on. Grabbed myself a clamshell type and the job was super easy. Still took 4 hours, but that was with plenty of beer and picture taking breaks.

just go to autozone and borrow one. You basically buy the tool but they let you return it.
