I want no part of this myself, I love to drive. Not to mention I get car sick while reading and such, so have no interest in playing with electronics in the car other than to change the station.

No thanks. An I, Robot future where automobiles drive for you seems terribly boring. I don't have a lot of hobbies so I'm not sure what I'd be interested in if it wasn't cars and driving.

I forget where I read it, but someone made a great point that there is a difference between commuting and driving...drives you have to do and drives you choose to do. Most won't miss the former, but hopefully there will be room for the latter. From a pure numbers standpoint, motor vehicle deaths and injuries are obviously a huge problem, so autonomous cars are probably the best solution.

People still ride horses and some still commute with a horse and buggy, so I think there will be room for cars somewhere...at the very least off-road or on tracks.

To sidetrack, I felt pretty ridiculous the first time I passed horse and buggies on the road...305 HP with horse emblems tacked on vs. 1 HP and an actual horse.

Autonomous vehicles will be here soon, very soon. Personally, I'm quite looking forward to it - it will mean I only need to own one car going forward.

But there will always be a market for people that want to drive their own non-autonomous car. And for people that want a performance machine. And companies are in it for the money... so...

Semi and fully autonomous cars are the future, as are fully electric and/or Hydrogen powered vehicles. The ones that are dedicated as fully autonomous would be great for commuting, but I still feel that sports cars and specialty cars will be semi autonomous because people will want to drive for enjoyment and for the love of performance. I don't think we will ever go to a,completely automated society as long as there are people who will share a love of all things with wheels, wings, hulls, and engines (of all kinds) .,

You know to be honest I downright hate driving sometimes..... Sometimes I think others should have no control over their vehicle due to the fact how horrible they drive themselves, BUT fully Autonomous cars for everyone won't happen even in a few decades. Too many cars as is that have no business on the road now.... unless the government plans on handing out these cars for free and maintaining them for free, I think it would be wiser to place your investments elsewhere.

Ford only announced that they will offer full autonomous cars with a goal of offering them to ride sharing companies, delivery fleets, etc by 2021...offerings to the general public will be years after.

From Autoline Daily:

"Ford is skipping over semi-autonomous cars and going straight to fully autonomous ones, just like Google. Ford says it can’t safely manage the hand-over when a human driver has to quickly take control of the car in an emergency situation. That’s why it’s skipping over semi-autonomy. Specifically, in 2021 Ford is going to offer SAE Level 4 autonomous cars with no steering wheel or pedals. But these will not be available in showrooms. Instead they will be used for ride sharing and package delivery. Ford says it will be several years later before customers can buy these as personal cars."
There it is. Ford is building a drone on wheels.
