ok i think i understand now.

i used to do this on my older bimmers. in the early 2000s

you can turn on your parking lights and fog lights without the headlights being on...

once auto headlights were invented i stopped doing things like that

The only reason I would leave them on in nice weather is to let other drivers know that my high beams are off. Most cars will not allow fogs and high beams. When I am being blinded by someone else's lights, I now look to see if their fogs are on before I flash them. Maybe I am getting old but a lot of lights look very bright these days.[emoji33]

When I feel like it
No, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, I just am having a hard time picturing a scenario where somebody would put on their parking lights but not their headlights. I've certainly never intentionally put the parking lights on (although a couple of times, when driving somebody else's car that I was unfamiliar with, I put the parking lights on accidentally, thinking that the headlights were on).

I just legitimately can't imagine why anybody would ever just put their parking lights on.

How about when you arrive at the drive-in movie in the dark? You need to see the ground but do not want to blind other movie goers. This is the only time I have used just my "parking lights".

Certainly not a norm for everyone, but standard protocol to go to parking lights-only at night time at security gates (for me at a Naval Air Station); helps not to blind the guards. I stay in Auto, except then, then back to auto. I haven't checked but I guess I may be losing fog lights staying on during this transition....

-Photos
-Sitting in a parking spot waiting for your spouse to get done shopping
-Overcast days (not raining obviously)
-Make the car more visible
-Because I'm cool

I just think these cars look BA with the parking and fogs on.
I think some of the rags must agree because alot of their photos are with the parking lights/fogs on and headlights off.

I do this all the time.

Low light in the morning or early evening, sometimes I don't want my head lights on

Some ppl like the "look "of the parking lights and fogs on together. I still do this sometimes when the sun has just started to go down or if it's cloudy or a light rain.

THIS ^^

Here is how I do it for my cars.

Leave the headlight switch in AUTO mode.
Using a fused relay, make it so the parking lights come on when the ignition is running.

So anytime the car is on, my driving lights and parking lights are on. I am installing switchbacks tonight, and that will make it all the better.

I am old school, thats how we did it back in the 80's, and I never stopped.

I don't like leaving my lights in Auto mode because the lights come on when the light changes such as going under a bridge. IMO, I think the tri-bar DRL's look very cool so I don't need the fog/parking light look any more. :headbang:

On my 2011 I had Raxiom CCFL Halo headlights with a small LED strip. The halo was similar to the bimmers and was wired to the park lights. I drove almost all the time with park lights+ fogs, except at night. I can see the need or want for it. I'll throw a pic up when I get to the computer.

I don't think you can turn on the parking lights and the fog lights at the same time on the S550 from what I've seen on my GT. Most vehicles are that way from the factory, and only allow you to turn on the fog lights when the headlights are on low beam. People usually have to modify the vehicle to have fog lights operate any differently than that.
