I live in Palm Springs and am getting a EB Mustang here pretty soon. As for a first mod, I was going to do a tune first, then I read about heat soak, so I was thinking intercooler then tune, CAI and down pipe. Does that sound like a good plan? I wish I had my own dyno to see numbers as I mod. Thanks for any input!

An intercooler should definitely be one of, if not the first, mods that you do. I just recently installed the Levels Performance FMIC and have seen a huge difference with it. The Charge Air Temps (CAT) were skyrocketing under WOT throttle passes with temps going 70°+ above ambient temps. With the LP FMIC, I'm only seeing 7°-11° above ambient in the same conditions. The throttle response feels much sharper and you can actually feel that the car pulls better and more consistent due to the lower CATs.

I live in Palm beach gardens Florida. One thing I can say is my car does not like the heat obviously. I would start with Intercooler/piping and tune, but before you get to crazy I would also invest on making sure the car runs cooler down here with this heat. oil cooler, and thermostat.

I too live in PBG. What brand are you going with for the intercooler, oil cooler and thermostat? Are all of these necessary?

I'm going with full race freakoboost IC and charge piping. Mishimoto oil cooler and livernois 160 thermostat. Yes they are necessary with this heat down here if you plan on getting on the car a lot. Plus the cooler the car runs the better it runs .I can't go one day with getting on 95 without somebody pulling up next to me.

Tampa here, honesly heat soak has never really been much of an issue on any of my 15-20lb boosted vehicles. I mean the IC on the ecoboost isnt that bad, it is not nearly as small as a side mount or anything, more like a Stereon or SRT neon intercooler in size. I don't yet own my EcoBoost, so I can not say 100%, but with all the thought and engineering that went in to this car, I doubt that the intercooler is going to be a big issue unless you add a bigger turbo.

It's actually one of the weakest points in the EBM

That is fairly surprising, it looked like a decent sized core. As I said, I don't own mine yet, was just going by observation. On a side note, is the turbo connected with a industry standard flange formation that would allow for a bigger upgrade? I know the exhaust manifold is integrated, but is the turbo as well? I figured I would have seen more sizable turbos on the car by now.

That im not to sure of with the flange. But yes, you can run bigger turbos. There isn't anything out for them yet still in development.

A lot of people are calling the intercooler a weak point and saying it needs to be swapped out, but on the flip side, Livernois is one of the most experienced EB tuners and their tunes are showing results and they have stated that an upgraded IC is not needed at current tune power levels

One of the issues i keep having is IC pipping blowing off:frusty:. I'm upgrading mine due to the heat temps here in South Florida and IC pipping blowing off.

I'm willing to bet that it'll be a worthwhile upgrade when they release their IC... ;)

But in all seriousness, LMS are probably the only ones saying the IC is fine. Every datalog on the stock IC I've seen doesn't look likes it's a wise choice to keep running it if you don't have to.

I just mentioned this in the "Tune Poll" thread. I have the LMS tune. I also WILL change an aftermarket intercooler. (MAP IC when it becomes available). Reason is a foundation for future upgrades. However, LMS makes their power at stock boost levels. The other tunes that are popular increase the boost to at least 21 psi which takes the turbo out of it's efficiency range. We all know what happens then. Increased IATs which eventually surpasses the stock IC capability.

This. Plus our logic is that since these car's have reached the limit of the fuel system already, putting an intercooler on it will just make it more likely that it hits the limit.

Will we sell someone an intercooler? Absolutely, but we are going to be honest one what our feelings are towards their usefulness on the car as well. We'd rather see someone invest the money into methanol injection, conquering two issues with one modification.
