First Manual Mustang - Propane Smell?

Hey all,

So this is my first manual mustang with a MT-82 transmission. Prior to this I learned how to drive stick on an old 4 speed Chevy Trail Blazer which when we got it did not have the greatest gearbox I'm sure.

Regardless, today I was practicing in reverse as I am struggling getting used to backing up the slight incline driveway and into the garage. If I let the clutch out fully she flys like a rocket to me and I do not want to run into the corner. So I tried feathering the clutch and throttle as i was coming in. I had so much control but after 2 or 3 practice runs sitting with the car in neutral I thought i had a propane leak from the hot water heater! I believe it was the transmission though and went away after a few moments.

Does anyone have tips for backing up in a controlled manner and also verify the smell I had? Going forward I'm feeling very confident, but the whole reverse thing and burning up flywheels is a whole new world to me.

I came here to search for the same thing! I am relatively new to manual transmissions, and have never owned a new car, so I am hoping (assuming) it is nothing note worthy and will go away after putting some more miles on the car.

That is the smell of burning clutch. Similar idea to when your brake pads stink from over heating.

The clutch in this mustang is by far the most sensitive clutch to slipping I have ever owned. It's just a regular stink bomb and smells up the cabin with any slipping at all. I have also noticed reversing to be the worst. I have to reverse to get into my parking spot for this car and I have gotten used to not even giving it gas, and usually letting the pedal all the way out quickly to avoid slipping and burning the clutch.

I expect this clutch to not last long at all... Seems like a pretty shitty clutch to me.
