Sounds almost like a rattle at higher speeds Usually never at low speeds. Idle and reving doesn't trigger it. What's the easiest way to tell if it's the heat shield or something else. Besides the obvious of taking off the heat shield.

I had this issue too and never really found a source or a remedy. I have a theory that it is coming from the flex pipe, or possibly the heat shielding. I am about a week or two away from finally getting my longtubes and first stage of mods in, i'll sound off here if one of my theories checks out. I sort of get some rattle when i bang around the flex pipe, but it is almost a metal on metal vibrating or grinding noise im hearing so not 100% sure I'm on the right track.

For what it is worth, I asked a shop owner who said "its a mustang thing, nothing to worry about" and couldn't find much online myself other than people either talking about the flex pipe, the suitcase resonator (which is missing from my car), and actually bad exhaust installs.

almost forgot... I'm running Borla type S mufflers. Could be an issue with the hangers or muffler too but it sounds like its coming from the center of the car

Wedge a piece of wood in it and take a run just long enough to see

Got active exhaust? I had this noise from the valves banging around after I installed my x pipe and didn’t get one of the mufflers leveled out perfectly. Leveled it out and good since.

I don't have active, and judging by his profile pic he likely doesn't either

The heat shield at least you can rule that out

I may give that a whirl when I put the longtubes in, thanks for the tip!

I'm hoping its the pesky flex pipe, I'm well connected enough with Borla to get the mufflers replaced if it is the muffler, but it just doesn't sound like its coming from the rear, and of course like OP I am unable to recreate it when revving at a standstill.

Get two people - one to use a rubber mallet to "tap" on the exhaust somewhere to make it replicate the noise, and the other to use their hands to locate and temporarily stop the rattle. Had to do that on my 2015 and it ended up being the primary tubes on my headers ever so slightly touching each other.
