Aloha, new to the site and my mustang. I have a 2021 GT with only 6k miles on it. I noticed that when I start the car, once it comes off high idle, I hear a distinct tapping noise that sounds like it’s coming from the driver side exhaust tip. Any ideas what it could be?

Active exhaust? Maybe the valve is flapping around in there? Just a guess.

Unfortunately I don’t have active exhaust, that would be a good guess though. It’s weird, when I first start the car I don’t notice it, but when it comes off high idle, is when I hear it. After it warms up completely it’s hard to notice, but I can cuz now I’m annoyed lol. First noticed it when I was next to a wall at a drive through. More annoying than anything, but if there’s a way to fix it I would like to. Stock exhaust, just hoping it’s nothing serious.

I don't hear anything in the video that is out of the ordinary. What type of exhaust system do you have on there?

It’s just the stock exhaust. Thanks, maybe I’m being paranoid lol.

I think you just need to go louder so it drowns out whatever you are hearing
You might be on to something there lol. I was going to start with an H pipe……

You sure it's coming from the rear? I have the bbq tick and it has a metallic tick that's not in any pattern. Ceratech helps mask it.

Try listening by the drivers side front tire. If it’s louder there it’s the tap/tick these are known for. If you rev it does it make any difference in the sound

It sounded like it was from the back, but I didn’t do a deep dive. I had to lookup the bbq tick. I don’t think that’s what it is from the videos I watched, but will definitely do some digging and appreciate the Ceratech tip.

I will check into this when I get off work. I know I don’t notice it in a cold start when it’s at high idle. I will let it come off high idle and try refine it to see what happens. Appreciate the info.

for my car, turning off the AC stopped the tick, so it has to do with engine load. It's still present, just muffled. Ceratech essentially does that, muffle it slightly.

If you want to eliminate an exhaust leak get the car in the air and look for telltale signs of soot near joints and connections. Or, with a spray bottle of soap and water, on a cold start spray all the joints and connections and look for bubbles. Or, if you have a thermal imaging camera, you could examine everything for different temperature signatures. I'd guess a leak would show up as different from the pipe itself.
