Exhaust Advice: Res Delete or Axle Back?

I wouldn't recommend cheap axle backs, just say NO!

The cheapest one that I like is the Roush, for 400 or so. With resonator actually it sounds pretty nice and not ultra loud at all. There is also the Pypes pro touring, about the same price, but I'd do it with an X pipe.

So, it's res delete. I like the Summit Racing ones, they actually fit outside of your stock pipes (as opposed to clamped on coupling), so you'll lessen the probability of leaks.

Actually, if you're going cheap, I prefer muffler deletes. IMO, they give a way better sound than res delete...if you're willing to go against the law.

Why do you say 'no' on the axlebacks? I put the Pypes axlebacks on my 05 GT about ten years ago and have loved it [almost everyone does who listens to it] ever since. Still deciding for my 17 GT.

I'm going with an axleback, the Hurst Elite axleback I found for a good price. I also contemplated removing the resonator, but opted against that figuring I could always do that later down the line. I daily drive my car some 60-70 miles a day and will be making trips in it. Wanted to stay conservative on the volume.

Yes Pypes does make good stuff. Do Corsa and Borla and others like AWE do more engineering into their exhausts? I have no doubt, and there are benefits they provide.

The big lesson I learned with exhaust on this car is don't cheap out. My resonator delete was chosen first for this reason, in large part. It then heavily restricts you on axleback choice later on without going LOUD. I wouldn't let the $700-900 on axlebacks freak you out unless you prefer the sound of the cheaper ones. There are tonal qualities and build qualities that come with that price. Better off finding a good deal on a lightly used axleback that used to be ~$800-1000 than being disappointed and saving a little money now and having to rebuy later.

This is my daily driver so I absolutely do not want anything loud or obnoxious. And any droning at all is unacceptable. Yet, I'm not quite happy with the volume and tone of the stock exhaust. It's close, but not quite there, want a little more.

That said, I want it to be cost effective as exhausts have gotten insanely expensive these days for what you get in return. So I have narrowed my choices to a res delete (haven't decided X or H pipe) or the Legato axle back. A big plus for the axle back is the upgraded tips, but obviously a res delete is less money.

I've read around here like crazy, and reading in circles about the endless options has just about made me crazy.

Any thoughts and feedback on this as well as H or X pipe (if you recommend the res delete option) would be much appreciated.

Note: I'm bone stock and really do not plan to do anything else in the foreseeable future other than maybe a tune/cai.

If you're wanting a bit more volume for low cost I'd recommend:
J&M's X-pipe. Its made of 304 Stainless (Better than 409 Stainless).

This option will increase the volume a bit more, but with the stock mufflers will be pretty tame still.


Otherwise I'd go Borla S-Type or Corsa Sport. Both seem out of your desired price point though. Sounds like Borla ATAK or Corsa Extreme will be way too loud for your taste.

I loved the sound of the pypes street pro with the stock resonator, really deep rumble and no drone, but it was too quiet for me. It would probably be a good choice for u. I sold it a forum member who had the same criteria and he liked it after install.

Just a warning, it will be much louder upon initial install than it will once broken in. I loved the volume at first and then it went quiet on me

i had magnaflows on my '03 cobra and loved the sound. i put magnaflows with a catted x pipe on my 1994 gt trickflow topend 302 and all i ever do is retighten the bolts so it won't fall off. when i first got my 2015 gt i liked the quiet luxury of the stock pipes but soon got bored with how quiet it was. a flowmaster x pipe resonator delete an american thunder axleback (they fit seamlessly so no cutting) later and i am loving the sound and improved performance. i thought it was louder than anticipated at first but you will get used to the extra power? strangely enough it got quieter after a steeda tune required cai and steeda tune. HTH

I'd recommend the SLP LM2 axleback. I got mine for $427 shipped. It's basically a quieter version of the Roush axleback, same straight through design except it has packing in the resonator canisters. It's louder and has a better tone IMO than swapping an X/H-Pipe and keeping the stock mufflers. It's on of the quietest AB's you can get.

With stock being a 1 and open headers being a 10. Where would you put the broken in pypes street pro touring?

The FRPP X pipe added just the right amount of volume for me. It is a little louder than stock until you get on it then it sounds great.
