I... don't really get that it is. Totally with you on it being a bad thing for a kid to get a free car from his / her parents (although my grandfather gave me my first car for free, but that was a 22 year old Carolla), but I don't see getting money off a Youtube channel you make as any different from that kid who got $50 grand from Kickstarter to make potato salad.
I think Branden worded it pretty well with his post below. Some YouTube channels are a form of work for the people running them. It takes time to film and edit these things, especially doing so on a frequent basis. Time is money, and if he's taking time to make these things, and if he can convince a fraction of his fan base to donate some amount of money so that he can continue making vids that they're interested in, then that's just making the most of what he has.

I'm envious of the guy, but not to the point that what I think he's doing is wrong by any means. Anyone technically has an opportunity to pull this off.

This... I'm sure the amount of time required is equivalent to working at least a solid part time job. It's silly to think he just "put up a video and got a free car". Bloggers and Vloggers are building a "business", just like if they went to a bakery every day and made cakes. They are producing a product, and people are buying. Just like in any business, some will be successful, some won't, sometimes it's fair market forces, sometimes it's the right place at the right time.

There's your business 101 lesson for the day. :)

I can't really buy this. It also takes time and effort to make Firefly slashfic, but that doesn't mean that it's "work" that people should be rewarded with by being paid for it.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I don't see self-publishing things as actually doing work that's worthy of being rewarded with pecuniary remuneration. If somebody's posting things on the same platform that I can post cell-phone videos of me doing shots at the bar, they're not really "publishing" in any real sense of the term.

I think you're underestimating the amount of time invested in making frequent videos. It's not like the guy is taking his phone out and cranking out some handheld-POV crap film.

Lots of people make careers out of being on YouTube.

Well, it seems you and quite a few people on the internet have differing opinions. Obviously some people find value in it.

So, how about self published albums that artists put out?

For sure. Look at that family, the Shaytards. I've watched maybe 2 of their videos over the years, but this is a very lucrative business for them and they get television coverage at times too. There are many more like them, including a guy in Idaho that reviews tactical equipment and I can almost guarantee he makes more money than Jimmy in his $600/hour field.

Crap, this is going way OT from the OP's intentions.

Right, like look at SaabKyle04! I love his stuff. He makes six figures and has an awesome job of offering a video-style encyclopedia of cars.

His reviews are a little dorky, and probably what I like about them. I found out about him in 2011 when for a *very* short time I had a Genesis Coupe.

maintaining a youtube channel and trying to make a profit of it, is beyond a lot of work. Editing along more than justifies the "work".

He sounds like what I'd imagine the human embodiment of Consumer Reports would be like. I was blown away to see how young he was after he started showing himself in videos, totally doesn't match his voice lol.

People who put out self-published albums are trying to make money from selling those self-published albums. People who post things on Youtube are hoping to get a sliver of the ad revenue Google derives from people watching those videos. That's... not actually engaging in commerce, really. It's the functional equivalent of standing on a street corner busking and hoping people drop change in your hat.

I don't buy this argument. Just because the economics have changed and you either willfully misunderstand them or choose to misunderstand them, doesn't mean it's not a real revenue stream/work/valuable.

Advertising dollars are what drive (or contribute to) many, many different mediums, including: music, tv, movies, etc. The newest is YouTube and other similar mediums. I recognize I'm not in the 80's anymore and I recognize things change.

If you can get 100K followers on YouTube by downing shots at your bar, more power to you.

I don't think you're old fashioned, but I do think you like to be the glass is half full guy in the room. I am not contrarian just to be so and recognize change and innovation in a free-market is what drives it to be successful.

And let's be clear - he just got $6000 for a down payment, he didn't get a free car.
