I'm having a little debate.

RE - common pedal boosters which would connect inline with the TPS harness.

My sentiment is that they modify the potentiometer signal from the TPS, possibly bringing power on sooner, but they don't actually make any additional horsepower.

Friend says it tricks the engine into making more torque because it tricks the ECM into thinking that it isn't meeting its torque target, ECM adds fuel/boost/timing, whatever.

What he says makes sense, but I am pessimistic.

How do these things actually work and what effect do they have on the vehicle's power output if any?

They work the way your sentiment implies. It's all modification of the curve. It just tells the ECU you have the pedal down further than it physically is. You can get exactly the same output from the car by pressing the pedal faster/further yourself.

I had a pedal commander on a hemi ram and it made the truck fun to drive. It will definetly give you an impression that you're getting a power increase even though you don't.

That's actually not true as you can hit the pedal as hard as you want but the throttle plate will still delay … check this video out - it's about 1 minute in or so.

I put one on my Bullitt as I usually want the Sport+ throttle response but the Normal suspension settings. Unfortunately, Ford doesn't give you a choice to pick and choose a la cart. I'll use red 9 when in Normal mode and green 9 when in Sport+ mode. Red is the sharper response over green and 9 is the highest setting within that color.
