I took my car out of town (to Milwaukee) for a night, parked it in a decent part of town, and came out to a mess in the morning. I cleaned it up as soon as I could and it looks like all of the damage is from the egg impacts. Two different shops have told me that the paint damage is deep enough that by the time any clear is buffed smooth they would be taking paint off, so a respray is really the only good option.

I have a $1,000 deductible (on purpose, so I don't claim every chip and ding), but I'm worried about my rate going up and a less than perfect match as an end result. At this point, I'm thinking screw it, now it's not new and it has some character. On the other hand, my paint was in nice shape and now it's trashed for no reason.

Thoughts?

:brokenheart:

I did get to a carwash right away to try to keep things damp, but had to drive an hour to get home before hand washing. I don't see any damage from the whites, just the shells, so I guess that's...good?

The problem is shells are very hard and sharp when smashed against soft paint.
Try some mild compound see if you can get it out.
I would imagine the scratches are pretty deep.
But who the fuck wastes eggs on someone else's car? I would rather make an omelet with them.

So, that sucks. I did that once as a kid, and I felt horrible for it, and still do.

I can't really comment on what you can do to fix the issue, but as for your deductible, vandalism is covered under your comprehensive policy, same as animal strikes. I always keep my comprehensive deductible at $100, and it costs me like an extra $12 for six months. When a previous car had paintballs shot at it, it cost me $100 for $1800 worth of damage. When another previous car had the fenders, hood, and door kicked in at a concert, it cost me $100 for $3200 worth of damage. Still another car was hit by a deer, and needed rear quarterpanel and trunk repairs, and again, $100 for $2500 worth of work.

The best part about the comprehensive is that they cannot raise your rates for claims. Sure, too many claims, and they'll drop you, but since comprehensive is typically things that are out of your control, they don't hit you for it.

Best of luck...

Maybe it a thing to throw stuff at Mustangs. Two weeks ago someone threw a big rock at me while driving through a wooded section of a 4 lane road. No other cars around. Sounded like a gun shot. It did this with glass pieces on the inside of the car.

Luckily it wasn't an inch higher and trashed out my roof.

Yikes. I'm thinking I might make the claim and consider it an expensive lesson in carrying high deductible insurance. Though $1,000 would be about right to sort out my suspension wish list...

Why not try buffing it out before committing to the large deductible?

If I can lighten it up with some polishing compound or something to where it's not as noticeable, that'll be fine. The chips have too much clear coat missing to be brought back, which I think is why body guys are saying they can't do much. If they take a tool to it, it will burn through the paint before the clear is polished and it'll look just as bad or worse, they've said.

Yikes..the chips might be deeper than they look in the pics. I had no idea that shells could do that. I always thought it was the egg white that people should worry about.
