So I'm in Atlanta for work and I got a chance to go by the local Ford Dealer today. They had several S550s out on the lot but I saw a ecoboost Guard and I had to drive it. First impressions looks wise is that it looks very European in the back half.. Kinda pays homage to Aston Martin even. Side profile is long but nice and the rear and front just make the car come together. BTW.. I checked for panel gaps and I didn't find any. Guard is really nice in person; photography doesn't bring out the uniqueness of the color.

Interior:
My first impression while getting in was that it just exudes class. Everything looked high quality and it looked better than many luxury cars actually. The door trim at the top at the window sill was hard plastic..something that I didn't like :(. The center console is also hard plastic. Overall the interior seems smaller than the outgoing car.. Which is nice for me.. I hate huge feeling cars in general. Seats were nice and comfy.. And supportive as well. I'm a tall guy.. But lean and muscular.. So side bolstering is very key for me. The Mustang delivered on that front. I'd stick with the stock seats; they are that good :). I didn't play around with the Ford MyTouch much.. Focused more on driving position and interior feel. The steering wheel is the perfect size for me! Which I was happy about. I didn't like the manual recline on the seats.. Ford could have sprung for power recline. Power lumbar was a nice touch though.

The Drive:

I drove an automatic car. First thing to get adjusted to is the long hood with the sudden drop off at the end. Never driven a car with this kinda hood before. Another thing to adjust to are the tiny side mirrors. The BLIS helps but still. Blind spot is bad on the left side.. But that's more cause its a coupe and the fact that I'm tall. So normal mode is meh.. I switched to sport mode within a couple of minutes and boy did the car wake up! It drives great!! It's very athletic and quick on its feet. It really reminds me of my dad's F30 328i sportline (which has an M-sport suspension). It's very quiet inside with the windows up but you can hear a nice noise with the windows down, from the engine. Ford has managed to make it drive very European like; smooth, refined, well sorted. Sport and sport plus are aggressive for the street... Plus more so. I wonder how the PP equipped car would be with the auto in normal mode. The ecoboost has plenty of thrust for me.. And I'd get great gas mileage to boot :). I think the 6 speed is well sorted for the car but I can't help but wonder how much better the ZF 8 speed would have been.

Final thoughts:

I'm totally in for the car! but I'd go with the PP and add on the auto cruise control as well if I could find one on the lot. In short.. Ford has done it; converted someone that has never previously considered an American car into having it at the top of the list of buying choices :)

Thanks for the write up.

I'm in the same boat--was looking at buying an entry level German sedan when I saw the Mustang at the car show last February and it totally changed my perspective on the Mustang brand. I appreciate the styling of S197 but would never consider buying one or any other retro styled car.

Regarding the door inside. I did get the chance to see a S550 Mustang in person and I agree 100% with you. Plastic on the doors? It looks cheap and is cheap. That is the first thing I will change on my car if a company offers aftermarket parts. Maybe I am doing it the old way and get the door covers to a shop to get leather around. Come on Ford! A 21,000 CAD Dodge Journey SE has better door covers with nice faux leather on the doors.

And thus the whole point of the Ecoboost Mustang and why Ford is pushing it so hard.

The premium model has manual reclining seats? I thought the seats were power adjustable for every position?

You can do both. There is a manual lever on the side to quickly tilt the seat forward or to get it close to where you want it. The motorized reclining positions don't have much of a range, so you "dial it in" with the motorized after getting it close with the manual lever.

Oh there is a power recline? I didn't even notice that.. I was looking for the button but I couldn't find it so I just grabbed the lever.

Ah, thanks for details on that. Seems a bit weird, though.

Is there a reason why there is no power recline?
