Downpipe power

So I'm already looking towards 2016 and modding my car. After doing some light reading I've chosen to do light mods for now (no tuning) and go big turbo later. But for now I want to stick to the small stuff.

I've been looking at exhausts lately and came across down pipes. I read that most of the power is in the downpipe and that cat back systems don't really offer much of a power gain. Is that true?

Also, I'd like to stay catted, as I now live in CA. How much power would be held back vs catless?

Being in California I'd be looking for carb certification if buying a downpipe. You are in the land of the smog Nazis. Unless of course if you plan on swapping it when it's testing time.

I don't have a dyno sheet to know for sure, but I felt a nice gain with the cat back system. Car seemed to gain power in the upper RPM's

I have an mrt catted, I didn't notice any performance difference, sound for sure, but after doing a tune it's hard to notice other mods because you get so much power from a tune

Cars are running 11's in the 110's without a down pipe. I trapped 111 without a down pipe. If you are looking for a new exhaust note, a nice light cat back exhaust will give you a different exhaust note, free up some power, and most importantly lose some weight. You will also not need to worry about emissions.

After that it's add parts to your liking (looks, sound) but the only thing that wakes these cars up is a tune.

If you go big turbo the kit will probably include an appropriate down pipe anyways.

I say tune, true up the rear suspension, maybe a cat back, and enjoy the fun while you save for your turbo kit. All will support the power later and not need to be replaced.

I keep forgetting intercooler. It was one of the first mods I did, it is a must have.

If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't touch the exshaust on this car....I felt more power with my stock system sad to say, the sound is cool,but I didn't buy a 4 cycl turbo for the sound lol

Yeah, back pressure loss. Had the same experience with my '13 V6 Mustang. On the other hand, my SRT-4's all sounded & ran great with aftermarket exhausts.

Yea it's weird, and your right I think it's a big back pressure loss, I have my resonator delete and a y pipe gong to two thrush mufflers, sounds insane, but I notice a power loss and it's really disconcerting to say the least. I think at this point I'm going back to stock, when I get the money. Just sucks, feels like I wasted $1000 for nothing but sound :(

That's what I've been reading. Even with a tune it'll push the turbo way past its limits. That's why I'd just like to stick to bolt ons and then get a bigger turbo with a good tune to make more power safely.

The exception is an intercooler and I have the ATM besides the tune, best money spent. If I had to do it all over again, tune, FMIC, and tires period until warranty ran out

Yeah I'm only planning on a CAI, inter cooler and maybe a catback until I can save the cash for a big turbo kit. But even then I wanna wait till my car is half paid off before I do that.
