I'll say this, 10 years ago when the Infiniti G35 was brand new I bought one and drove it to work, my sister told me not to but I blew her off. That day my supervisor brought me in and suspended me for something that occurred six months prior. (I don't remember for what, but none of it felt justified) Apparently on the day I was suspended he came in and told the group that some people shouldn't buy nice things.

I was a technician in a different career then, I now sit as a stand alone specialist where i advise decision makers, most know I'm getting a Shelby and I don't give a F.

I say all this to say, be mindful of your environment but at the end of the day none of it matters. Me getting suspended made it clear I needed to move on professionally and I did, now I just look back and laugh. Drive your car and enjoy it.

Wow. And I thought having someone slash your tires or key your paint out of jealousy was really crappy.

To the OP's point, this is the first "toy" I will own since being put into a managerial role. Now not only am a younger authority figure (30), but I'm not sure I need the people who report to me to see this car at work.

I will likely exclusively be driving the Focus ST into the office, at least until I get to know my team a bit more.

I know, first world problems.
First world problems for sure, but I can absolutely relate. I am also way on the younger side for being in an authority and decision making role at my company. I only consider two of my vehicles to be office visit and client taxi friendly to begin with, and the new bright orange Shelby won't be making that into a list of three to say the least.

I couldn't find a single fuck to give about what other people think about what I drive. :) I took my 911 one time for dinner with a client in town from Miami with my mgr and coworker. Somehow I ended up driving the client to his hotel. Told him all the great things about the car, gave him a little taste ... not only did we win the deal, but he bought one too. :D

Do not live your life in fear of other people's opinions.

It has a big influence on my car choice

I'd rather be driving a Mustang GT350 and get a point by from a Porsche driver than driving a Porsche and have to give a point by to a Mustang GT350. ;)

Sounds like you just don't want to be getting passed on the track, no matter what you drive? I'm confused.

I don't care what people think about me or what I drive either. It's not very likely I would have ended up ordering an orange car if that concerned me! In my office environment and with clients I don't have much choice but to prioritize discretion. It is not "living in fear" that people's opinions can have business implications in some situations, it is reality.

Well i wont show up in a Camry or Honda. I don't really care what the uninformed think. Generally speaking driving daily a gt500 has been well received - all kinds of positive comments. Best ever comment was my daughters friend who told me her dad had a similar car but it was not nearly as fast as mine. She was 12.. Her dad had a camaro ss, i had gt500. Smart kid

The porsche and Shelby will likely stir some discussion amongst co-workers but nothing over the top.

There are some brands that would be problematic. If one drove a Ferrari or Lambo to work for example.

I see Midlife crisis car a lot. To me it's only a midlife crisis car if it is something that you just went out and bought on a whim.

I've been talking about getting a Shelby for years and this is the one for me. Everyone that opinion matter to me knew this was coming and are supportive.

So my life is not in crisis, but I am in midlife. It just took me this long to get to a point where the car is something that won't through my life into crisis.

As far as people at work, people above you, peer to you and subordinate to you will always make judgments about you in every decision you make professionally or personally.
