Do transmissions usually make noise?

My gt is my first gasoline car. It's an auto and at 4200 miles on it the transmission keeps making odd noises. Pinging when switching between p and d. Also clunking when going from a stop and accelerating into first gear.

Are these pings and clunks normal?

The nature of gearsets working together will always make noise. Especially when rotating at high speeds.

The pings seems odd. The clunking could be due to a loose tranny mount (easy fix). Both should be investigated though.

You just don't hear it over the exhaust, wind and road/tire noise.

I have a 2017 GT automatic with a little over 1,000 miles, You are not supposed to have pings and clucks.

I use to get like a ping noise when switching from reverse to drive, I believe, but it seems to have gone away with 2k miles on the car now.

Lol, me too. I think thats normal for the MT-82. Sever other forum members have complained about it too.

The one on my TL was magic. Tight and sure shifting but also smooth. This one is a little more unrefined. I am looking into a new shifter to see if it will tighten up some of the slop.

As for the OP, I don't think that's normal. Should get it checked out.

did you put the 42k miles on the car? or buy it used?

If you bought it used with 42k, somebody drove the SH*T out of that car, I would get it checked. a 2016 with 42k seems very very high, maybe a rental?

I believe its 4.2K, not 42K.

Ah, makes much more sense now. I was thinking to myself who would buy a 2016 GT with 42k miles!

If the auto is making noise, and its only got 4.2k miles, get it checked. Its under warranty anyways.

If it was a manual, I would say welcome to the club, like others have said here the MT-82 likes to make all sorts of noises.

Wherever there are moving parts, there will be tolerances.
In your case the drive shaft and the rear diff contains many parts that move so there will be many clearances.
What you are hearing is when the transmission change direction, the slack is being taken up.
RWD is usually more noisy than FWD. 4WD is the worst.
Now being Ford, the tolerances might be bigger to keep cost low.
