I am looking at this set of OEM takeoff wheels with SC2 tires. Seller claims they have TPMS. Obviously the valve stem is rubber and not aluminium like the OEMs, but is there any way to tell if the TPMS is actually there? I have read that aluminum is better for track use because of the heat and if that is correct then I will have to swap them out anyway I guess.

What model year were they taken off from? It looks like a rubber stem, but it could be black metal. If it's rubber, I'd be cautious about the deal - it might be ok, but new take-offs from a GT350 shouldn't have rubber valve stems, and in any case, you'll have to change them to metal if you're planning on driving fast. Problem with rubber is they bend at high speed and that can cause leaks.

This brings up another question. Are our TPMS sensors the band type attached to the barrel or on the valve stem?

I am not sure of the year. These were apparently purchased from Detroit Wheel and Tire, which sells these OEM wheels online. The valve stem is definitely rubber though and not black metal. Seller said they bend easily. So I guess I would have to change them to metal.

He wants $2400 for the set. SC2s look new. But I would have to pay $200 shipping.

These are the OEM ones:

Extra $240 plus install plus balancing. Hmmm......

If it is not a carbon wheel that is the correct valve stem

That is not the correct valve stem. That is a pre ‘18 wheel and the valve stems were silver. I’m not saying it doesn't have a sensor, but it most certainly has been swapped out. You can look at the wheel design and tell right away that’s not a carbon wheel.

All GT350 stems are metal.

I agree, there is a story behind those wheels.

All metal...
Yes indeed. Furthermore, someone said metal was used for speed reasons. I was always told it was for heat related issues.

Thanks guys. This confirms that I would have to swap out the TPMS for track use, which makes it less of a deal. $2400 + $200 shipping + $300 for TPMS and balancing. Probably going to pass.

Well that sucks, I just got my SV701 and I didn't realize this nor did Discount Tire. Admittedly, I just brought the tires and wheels individually to them so they didn't really ask me what car it was for and I figured they probably thought I was very well informed but I didn't know this. DT is ordering the silver (no other color available) metal hex valve to swap my black rubber ones out. What a shame...

Thanks for the thread op.

You want Ford TPMS-39. The TPMS sensors are not the same as other models. I believe they are 515 Mhz? Don't quote me on that. My point is, you don't get run of the mill sensors. They are specific to the 350 and 500 and ?

I bought my last set of 4 on ebay for $120.

@Tomster, I paid a total of $ 240 for the rubber ones (BHS UV3041 TQ12 T10 315 INTLSNS / UVS3041). However, the metal one are needed for high performance speeds so that's a mistake I'm going to rectify asap. However, I can't imagine the TPMS sensors have to be specific for the GT350 / 500. Especially since my wheels are custom made and are not designed by Ford. However, If i have to buy the Ford ones then I definitely will. I can't imagine that it is necessary tho

why does it have a * stating it's not designed for 155+ speeds.

No, they are metal because of the HUGE amount of heat that the brakes generate. Rubber will probably melt. That would be a bad thing. They don't line the inner walls of the CF wheels with a ceramic lining for nothing.

Yes, they need to share the same frequency range of (I believe) 315 Mhz. Not all TPMS sensors are in that frequency.

Yes, get the Ford TPMS-39's. I believe Ford may have updated the metal ones on later modes to be black, so Im not sure of that model number.

I have extra sets of custom wheels too. 3 sets to be exact. All Signature wheels. The stem hole in the wheels are cut to accept any universal TPMS/stem. That doesn't mean that you should use any generic stem/TPMS. It has to be a metal stem.

I just looked on ebay, and the seller isn't selling them anymore for that kind of money. The prices have gone up. I would stick with OEM Ford, no matter how much they cost.
