This is how I feel. I have been burned by shops in the past not doing things right. Not this shop but another one. I am new to these 4V engines though and not sure about the timing thing when removing the chains and everything.

Man, I wasn't sure either. Had never done one of these. Just put everything back together and then double check it. If the timing marks line up after all the tensioners are in place there is NO way the timing can be off. If you're careful there is no way to f it up.

There is so much little stuff....so many things to put a torque wrench on to make sure it's perfect... I can't imagine any paid shop putting as much detail into the repair as the owner would. I personally think that attention to detail is what makes it hold together. Especially when the torque values are 18lb-ft + 60 degrees or something absolute like that.

I am so torn if I should do this myself or have a shop do it. I have an appt with a local shop to do it for $475 on MOnday. Is $475 worth doing it myself? It sounds like a pain in the butt but I know it will be done right and I know what exactly was done.

is it a mustang shop? i dont think i would trust any shop to do this that hasnt done it before

Yes they have done plenty of Mustangs as well as other Domestics. I know they have done other 2015 Mustangs but it is still not their car. They will not pay as much attention to things and be as careful as I will.

It depends on where you are. A dealer is gonna charge shop rate which could be $110-$180/hr depending on region. A smaller shop might charge $85-$150 depending on region. A dealer will also charge book rate, where a smaller shop may know how long it will take them and charge for that amount of time. For example, a dealer might charge for 12 hours and if their mechanic is good enough, they're doing it in 8 hours, so they made money. Where a shop might know they can do it in 10 and bill for 10. Maybe they get it done in 8. Less overhead for the littler shops.

I have an amazing GM mechanic who only charges $50/hr (I live in rural ass CO). So at 10 hours. $500 isn't far off. $475 could be $47.50x10 hours.

I've never been in a DOHC engine before, but like others have experienced, I have been burned by shops before. So I'm taking this on myself. Am I scared? Absolutely. But you can be damn certain I'll be the most anal SOB disassembling/reassembling this thing and I won't let out a sigh of relief until it fires. I also can't count the number of times I've read the service manual on this. But I also have a mechanical aptitude and I've been cars since before I could reach the pedals. I've been in numerous small block Chevy's (I know not the same thing).

If you can turn a wrench, and follow instructions, all the power to you. If you don't have the time, and got the cash...pay someone.

What shop in Va., if it's Kelley Performance, you need not worry, he is very very good with these coyote motors, but I have no idea what he charges, but I have known him for years

Anyone in Norcal do this, or have a reputable shop that has done this? Since Im in the process of deciding on F/I, Im really wondering if this is a MUST HAVE or NICE TO HAVE.

Just thinking out loud about the last part.... but, anyone know a good indie shop in Silicon Valley?

the most important thing is timing the engine right, i've seen many people not set the marks up correctly, take your time, use mirrors and verify everything
