So in my mind, a staggered setup has been, and always will be, a different wheel width in the front from the back. In other words, a 19x9 front and 19x10 back, or 17x7.5 front and 17x9 back, etc. Accompany this with the proper offset front and back. Then run the proper tire size front & back, such as a 265 up front and a 305 out back, and you have a staggered setup. A square setup, in my mind, is the same wheel size on all four corners, regardless of tire size. However, after searching FB MP for some wheels, I see a lot of folks selling square setups with different-sized tires as a staggered setup. I.E. 19x9 wheels with 255 up front and 285 out back, etc. When did this become a thing? Am I the old man now, talking about..."back in my day" and "get off my lawn"?

got this off the internet so it has to be right, LOL. ( I think I would agree)

Staggered wheels come in two main variations.

The first variation refers to the width of the tire. It’s the first three numbers in a tire size, and it’s the easiest way to stagger your tires. This way you can make small changes to a tire’s width without changing the rims or any other components.

The second variation of staggered wheels requires a bit more work. You might have heard of the term staggered rims. So what are staggered rims, and what does having staggered rims mean?

Simply put, it’s when you change the rim size — which results in a tire with a wider diameter

95% of the time its both, but yes you can have staggered wheels and square tires (my 18” setup is 11” front 12” rear but 315 tires all around) or staggered tires on square wheels as you noted. You can have square wheels and tires but different offsets… thats not usually considered staggered but it mean you can’t rotate like a truly equal/equal/equal square setup.

Generally when we’re talking about staggered its the tires (they’re what touches the road), but yes, theres more to the story.

9” front and rear with a 285 tire pinched on the 9” rear is what happens when somebody wants “the biggest rear tire that will fit” and are too cheap to get properly wide wheels. In other words, its probably super common.

Interesting discussion.
I guess I get that going with different tire widths on front and rear can technically be called a staggered set up, I guess...
But, to my mind, a staggered set up will always be narrower wheels and tires on the front than the back that cannot be rotated front to rear.
To me, if the front and rear wheels can be rotated (regardless of tire size) then it's not a true staggered set up.
And you damn well better stay off my lawn!!!
