Folks,

Need your input on if I have to get a balancer 6rib with crank gear and OPG. Is balancer necessary and most topics I read on here people only say OPG and CG is needed.
Do I need to install balancer 6rib in order to run my new 2.8LC Kenne bell supercharger?

Goal initially is to run 630whp but eventually I plan to do higher psi and flex fuel in order to be around 800whp and probably stop there.

So need balancer now at 630whp kenne bell 11psi level or will I need to buy and install at 800whp level?

Thank you

Not an expert by any means, but I've read a lot on this topic over the last year, and I have on my belt one of the phew OPG failures here. Yes my stock OPG went out this summer and I had an aftermarket MMR balancer. The balancer is only part of the picture and as I learned not the most important for sure. If you replace the OPG and the crank gear you should not need to worry about them failing with the stock balancer. Most people put the after market balancer on because it's only an additional $400 and it's already off and one needs to put back on so why not a better one. Yes a good balancer will reduce torsional vibration and reduce wear on the crank driven components, but it will not save the stock OPG from failing as in my case.

Hey man, can you go into a little detail aboutt your failure. I tried looking for the post last night but got busy befor I found it. I see you have a Whipple, is it their tune or cranked up any by another tuner? Is your rev limiter set the same as factory or is it higher? Curious if your car is stick or manual? Do you recall if you hit the rev limiter when it happen, or is hitting the limiter something you think you do occasionally. Also curious if you take your car to the track and hammer it much. Are your rear tires anything badass/sticky that might cause shock to the system? You know basically all the things that have been said to hurt the factory OPG. Thanks for any info. I'm in the same boat, debating on installing before or after the SC install.

Thanks for your response and sorry to hear about your engine.

So OPG and CG is a must - but balancer is not needed.
However since OPG and CG are getting installed, it is smart to upgrade balancer.

I was going to go with all 3 parts with MMR.

So if you were me, would you do it balancer with opg And CG?
I mean I m spending total of 10k so I don't want to spend money if it is. It needed is how I think of it and if it can support 750-800whp down the line with stock balancer and maybe I upgrade to 8 rib later when I increase boost. Not sure what to do.

You really need to read my thread on this attached below. I was always one saying and defending stock OPG is not needed on a street car and look what happened. It's not the whipple calibration. My car was a street car not raced with street radials and I wasn't hard on it. I did that day bang it hard from 1st to 4th and at the top of 4th it let go around 6k. I also did not band it off the rev limiter though it happened in the past.

I just did it on my new motor, and yes I went with ATI damper as well. If your looking for possible 800whp than why not do it.

I read your stuff and I was definitely going with OPG and CG MMR but was debating to upgrade balancer or not. There was no questions about upgrading OPG and CG, those are already ordered.

I would go with ATI over MMR if the MMR is made by ROMAC. I had a ROMAC on my 306 Small black ford and it caused a crank failure because it was not machined correctly.

Just do the damper and be done with it. These motors aren't cheap so cry a little now from the little extra coin spent and save yourself from saying "man I wish I would have bought that damper when I did everything else"

I did all three and can rest easy when I accidentally bang off the limiter or go from full throttle to no throttle in a split second. I know when I beat on my car like it owes me money I don't have to worry about something stupid like an oil pump costing me a motor.

Thank you all

Conclusion is that I am installing all three.

MMR has OPG and CG for $480
MMR Balancer is 399$

Total $880 and done for piece of mind.
Done - small price to pay to make sure things run smooth.

It is hand assembled by Romac based on their website
I ll check ATI as well before ordering

Getting ready to have my blower and accessories put on by Jay at hypermotive, and he said not to worry about the damper. No need since I will be doing the opg and cs. Said not to waste the money. My tuner did as well. Will be tuned by KB.

Does it NEED to be done? No.
SHOULD it be done? Yeah.

It's better to reduce vibrations that could cause other issues. Aftermarket dampers are better than stock.

Who is your tuner? I did not think Flex Fuel tunes were available for boosted cars...???
