I used to hate the idea of DRLs (especially after seeing so many GMs driving around with one burned out ). But now that I own this amazing car, I want to make sure people are able to see me and decrease the risk of them pulling out in front of me and risking a wreck. So this time around I actually appreciate them.

I'd rather be safe than sorry about this car.

We should argue about the wipers instead...I miss the old Ford system that had 7 or so speeds so you could choose just the right one for the rain. Right now the wipers are either too fast or not fast enough ! I probably just don't understand the new wiper system yet...

Until such time as I get into an accident that absolutely-guaranteed would have been prevented by DRLs or whatever else, your insurance rates will remain unaffected by my driving, guaranteed. Actually, I've been doing a pretty good job of helping to keep your rates down over the last 40 years, with only a single highway speeding ticket on the books over that time. You can thank me later.
...

Most times when somebody plays the "you're whining" card, they've just run out of relevant things to say. You assume it's oncoming lights I'm responding to, but that's completely false. I suppose I could go take a picture of one of the areas I had in mind (with a car coming toward me, of course). Do I need to? I have to go out later anyway, and I could take my little point-and-shoot camera and make a special detour . . .
To that first point there: The only accident I've ever been in, which was 100% my fault, was because of a seatbelt. I was pulling out of a driveway and hit a parked car because I was reaching down to put my seatbelt on and thus wasn't looking where I was going. Does that mean that seatbelts shouldn't be in cars because they cause accidents? Of course not. Statistically speaking, seatbelts save a lot more lives and a lot more insurance dollars than they cause, and so it's mandated that cars have to have them, and nobody really has a problem with that.

As to your statement that "You assume it's oncoming lights I'm responding to, but that's completely false," no, that's not correct. To be perfectly honest, nobody who wants daytime running lights to be on cars care what you or I or anybody else thinks about having daytime running lights in their own cars. Because you can't see the daytime running lights on your car. OTHER PEOPLE can. Whether or not your car has daytime running lights makes zero difference to your ability to drive your car properly -- it SOLELY affects other people's ability to see you. So, again, nobody really cares what

Arguing that daytime running lights should be defeatable is really the very definition of pointless. Because you can't control somebody else's behaviour, you can't control whether they're going to be defeating their daytime running lights or not, so it makes no difference to you whether they have the ability to shut off their DRL's or not. And it doesn't affect you, since it doesn't change your ability to drive the car or not, since DRL's don't change your own visibility patterns. So basically you're arguing about your right not to have other people be able to see you.

Maybe I don't understand the argument against DRL's? There are many things on any car that perhaps people don't like, but you know what you're getting when you buy it. To take offense at DRL's seems a stretch; It does seem like whining, when there are so many more valid things one could plant their flag on to make a righteous point.
The reason I don't want DRL's: There are many times when it's cold outside and you need to leave the engine running to stay warm while parked, but don't want people down the block to know that there's somebody in the car. Take your pick of reasons: you're having sex in the car; you're having a long conversation and don't want to be disturbed; you're conducting a drug deal; you're a cop on a stakeout; you're eating a Big Mac and don't want your wife seeing because she thinks you're on a diet. DRL's let the whole world know that there, halfway down the block, that parked car has somebody in it. And that's not something that I'd like to advertise to people.

I haven't agreed with everything I've read that you've posted in other threads, but you hit the nail on the head here.

It's not the DRLs per se. It's about having control over when or whether they're lit taken away from you, aka treating you like the lowest common denominator driver on the planet.

Of course there are DIY "solutions", but that's not what this discussion is about.

Nope, you still aren't getting it. It's the DRLs on cars driven by other people coming toward me that I'm not responding to, because it's the general bulk of the vehicle that I typically pick up first. Of course those other drivers aren't seeing the lights that are aimed at me, and yes I am saying that under most daytime conditions I don't need to have lights shining at me to notice that there is a car coming.

So basically you're arguing about your right not to have other people be able to see you.
No. I'm arguing about keeping the right to determine for myself when I need to turn on any lights to make it easier for others to see me. Historically I've done a pretty good job of this, certainly better than the job now being done by people who do have DRLs where it comes to putting the full headlights on when it gets dark/rainy/etc. Maybe just admit that DRLs have this downside and quit trying to convince me that they're somehow a perfect solution.

Incidentally, I don't move the car until after I buckle up unless I'm just shuffling cars around in the driveway. I can't ever see a situation where I'd be buckling up while I'm driving and the car is in motion or any way where I could argue against belts. Hell, the only reason I'm here to argue with you instead of being almost 50 years into a very long nap is because of seat belts, in a car that didn't come with them originally. Another experience I took something very valuable from.

Seriously, why is this still going on? 22 pages for fcuking DRLs?
DRLs can be shut off. No one is forcing the foil heads to use DRLs.

It can be shut off. Seriously your 1st world bitching is annoying.

I thought they could be shut off (according to the manual), but I don't think you can in a non-fleet car :/

Even if you can't shut them off. If you don't want to see them then sit in your car and drive. You can't see them from inside.

This really doesn't deserve 22 posts let alone 22 pages or arguing the same thing.

Yes I know I could avoid it and I have tried but since I replied much earlier I keep getting email updates.

Please do. Because up until now I have no idea WTF you are talking about.
Even better, a video. The first two cars coming toward me have DRLs, which you don't pick up until after you've seen the vehicles themselves (real life or video). Car #3 is using full headlights, which is what I use along that stretch once conditions become a little less favorable.

What I hate is when I hit my breaks the lights on the back come on. Suggestions on how to disable that?

sorry guy the more you write the more i'm convinced you or anyone else can not be trusted to manually operate DRL

you argument is :

-you have a perfect driving record and guarantee will not cause any accidents . -> automating DRL or any other vehicle function makes you feel like someone trusts you less
-want to have sex, deal drugs, cheat on your wife, all on public roads in hiding

that's some grade A trolling, and for that I applaud you.

Being a matter of trust . . . maybe that's close enough. Where your basis for believing I can't be trusted to manually operate some lights comes from, I have no idea. But it didn't come from knowing me.

My driving record is not perfect, and I've put it right out there. But it is good enough to guarantee that it has helped hold insurance rates in general down as opposed to making them increase. I'm not the bad risk either to myself or to others (including you) that you (and others) are trying to paint me as being - just because you don't like the way I think on a few topics.

i dont need to know you, i know humans well enough. making errors is what we do.

do the best due-diligence without getting ego involved -> what we're trying to prevent with DRL is to avoid having to say 'i'm sorry'

Also: It isn't about you. No regulation or law or rule is about any one person. It's about what's statistically likely to be more beneficial or less beneficial to society as a whole. You might only kill people if you have a really good reason for it, but statistically speaking, that's not the case for most murderers, so we have laws against murder.

To assume that you know any individual just because you know human nature in general is to stick your head in the sand.
