Hello every one I’m new here! I have a 2017 mustang gt 6r80 auto with a stage 1 Whipple gen 5 other than that I’m stock. Whipple tune CARB. 45k miles.

I’m trying to get down to the bottom of this cooling issue I’ve been having, even prior to having the blower installed. Also please note.. that I’ve researched everything as possible to figure this out with no real solution.

the Weather has been chilly in California Los Angeles. 50-60° and I’m experiencing Cht temps of 210-220° daily driving!!. I upgraded to a PP radiator and using 80/20 water and coolant as well as a bottle of water wetter, which is even more concerning that I have higher temps.. Im not trying to find out what my temps will be in the summer. I know there are ways of cooling the motor (hood vents, grill deletes, etc) but I’m trying to see if I have a problem because it’s cold and daily driving. I feel like those other cooling options are band-aiding the problem. Thank you.

That's not really that unheard of, the car doesn't even turn fans on until like 223. How long has it been doing that for?

Since this year. Before I was always under 200° and with only coolant and the base radiator

When WOT the car sees even more higher temps especially at the circuit. Then eventually goes into limp mode. My transmission daily driving also hits 215° always was around 200° even when I had a 4c converter stall.

maybe I need a better tune idk.

Try replacing your water pump, 15-17 cars are notorious for bad pumps. There's also a higher flow ford performance one you can upgrade to if you want. It's a pretty easy job overall.

Would the pump be failing slowly? I thought the water pump would just stop working period if it was bad. I’ll look into it.

If I remember right the impellers on the earlier cars are plastic, if one of them breaks off it can reduce the flow. Same with if the bearing is starting to fail.

Welcome to M6G! Lots of great folks and tons of valuable tech.

Not sure if this will be helpful, but I posted this back in 2019 - TSB 19-2049 from Ford - faulty CHT sensors in 5.0’s:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/tsb-19-2049-cht-mil-dtc’s-p1289-or-p017d.120216/

I would also check the harness to the CHT, check the pins in the connector AND do a continuity test of the actual CHT sensor to make sure it's in spec before throwing parts at the car.

Here's how to change the CHT if anyone needs it:

i don’t think it’s my Cht sensors, the temps aren’t jumping too high or low as some have had this issue with those symptoms. I’m betting that it’s probably my 45k miles water pump. I didn’t know these don’t last long. I have been hearing a strange knock around the water pump area. Might be going on its way out. I’ll replace it as a maintenance check.

the thermostat has been replaced since the Whipple install and had been replaced prior with a 170° before that so no, I don’t think it’s a thermostat issue but thanks.

I’m hoping you’re correct about this. I’m going to be changing it out as a maintenance check and peace of mind. I am hearing some knocking around the water pump area. Probably on its way out.

so I have 2 options, buy the oem factory water pump or the ford performance water pump. Not much of a price difference but it says it’s 30% more efficient. Also I would think the upgrade would be better due to being blown now.

Unless you plan on using the car in cold temperatures, i'd just go with the upgraded one since you have a blower.
