to be honest i'm not sure. It may have to do with flow going into the filter. I just remember reading it being a resonator. I'd assume it could be removed and capped.
here's what i found by googling it, but i'm not sure if it's accurate, as it's from AM, and their "experts" seemed to believe a gt350 couldn't use boss coil covers in one of their youtube vids, so take this with a grain of salt lol.
"The resonator has 2 main purposes, the 1st; to reduce the amount of factory intake noise in the engine bay, and the 2nd; to provide an excess amount of open air in the case of the need of sudden acceleration, thereby increasing overall throttle response. If removed, throttle response will reduce and noise will increase."
