to be honest i'm not sure. It may have to do with flow going into the filter. I just remember reading it being a resonator. I'd assume it could be removed and capped.

here's what i found by googling it, but i'm not sure if it's accurate, as it's from AM, and their "experts" seemed to believe a gt350 couldn't use boss coil covers in one of their youtube vids, so take this with a grain of salt lol.

"The resonator has 2 main purposes, the 1st; to reduce the amount of factory intake noise in the engine bay, and the 2nd; to provide an excess amount of open air in the case of the need of sudden acceleration, thereby increasing overall throttle response. If removed, throttle response will reduce and noise will increase."

So it is like an air bubble, air if you need it, otherwise useless, hmm more research will be done.

i removed res on the stock air box... and i also removed the one on the inlet tube weds. one on the inlet i used a plastic insert the same size as the hole then used 3m 2 min epoxy from work to sure it up.. so far it isnt going anywhere
did the same for the lower ab res also..
i didnt notice any lack of throttle response.. if anything it feels better

The one in front of the filter is for sound. The one attached to the inlet tube going into the throttle body is for performance, as mentioned above. It's not so much sudden response as dealing with the pressure harmonics inside the intake system. Air rushes in when the throttle and valves are open. When the valve shuts during the compression stroke, the air hits a wall and creates a wave coming back. The resonator helps deal with that. Realistically you just need a big enough volume of tube. Mishimoto found this out when developing their silicone induction hose.

So Rob,
you took off all resonators, more than one?

If I had it to do over again I'd do the following:

Stock air box with high flow filter
remove and plug resonator
Velossa Big Mouth or grill/honeycomb delete

Hogging out the honeycombs made a world of difference to IATs

just to be clear, the resonator is the mushroom cloud in front of the air box. I'm planning on drilling out my grill today and removing the filter so I can vacuum any debris from drilling and then removing the mushroom piece and tape over the hole?

You need to do a little more than tape to avoid whistles. A plug and some epoxy or other adhesive sealant, or just a great fitting plug.

Thanks, I'll figure out something, I wonder if the Velossa kit eliminates the resonator?

Depending on where you live and whether or not you drive in the winter I’d also be a little careful about letting too much air in.

One reason the grill is designed the way it was is to accommodate selling the car all over the world. In very cold environments the engine doesn’t want too much cold air coming into the engine compartment, or it will have a harder time reaching its operating temperature.

This is why you often see semi trucks in cold climates with their front grills partially covered up. It allows the engine to stay cozy, closer to its designed operating temp.

Anyway if you live in a warm place or don’t drive in winter... carry on.
