I think there is some good guidelines about the ecoboost and some things that make me scratch my head.

If one is looking to tune their car there are some things commonly listed to help performance and safety of the tune:

Intercooler
Plugs - one step cooler
Quality oil

Bolt ons are for more performance of either hp, tq, sound, or combination of.

Tune - many good choices here all seem to have similar dyno plots but different approaches/personalities to their tune.

Now we unfortunately seen some engines go south and a lot of conversation spanning WOT in high gear, catch cans, oil, beating on their cars led to the problem, too much low end torque, meth should be used, early engine builds, and big turbo is the way to go.

That's where things get muddy for me. People with tunes and people that sell tunes talk about how they drive their cars hard and no issues and how safe the tune is.

Not sure anyone can know anything right now, but there is a lot of contradictions that have my head spinning right now. Also with every engine issue, the apparent list of what to have or not to do grows.

This might not be what people are intending to mean but reading everything it seems like one would need two catch cans, intercooler, plugs, oil, big turbo, down shift before you even think of hitting the gas pedal in 6th, do not go into boost until engine is warm, and enjoy your car and drive like you stole but don't beat on it.

Guys, I want to experience a tuned mustang, but man I'm think I'm going to keep the access port in its original packing for a while. Wish someone had the full proof recipe to tune without worry.

If you are worried you can always wait and see what parts are better than others, thats what I'm doing. Waiting for parts to come out, people to test them blow stuff up, break stuff, test it and report back. Its much cheaper and less stressful to let everyone else test the new parts out on a new car.

Just do intake and exhaust and wait a while for the tune until things get better sorted.

I was thinking of doing the stage 1 from vargas but now I'm reconsidering. Maybe someone in the know could inform me but from my thoughts if it's just a upgraded stock turbo it might be even more harmful to the engine as in its a more efficent stock turbo? Or is it considered a "big turbo upgrade". Is the torque curve changed enough from stock that it could be "safer" for the engine? I haven't seen anyone post that has the stage 1 about their experience with it. I guess for now I'll stick with the cosmetic upgrades.

And I have a catch can:rolleyes:

I don't know where to begin with this post....if you have an Accessport sitting in your house and it's not being used, then I feel sorry for you. Not in a making fun of you way, but in a sucks for you that you can't enjoy twice the amount of performance. Even an OTS tune stage one from Cobb and you will be kicking yourself. Most of these guys that posted blown engines, do you ever think they are going to give u 100 percent of the truth? Prob not, most of these guys beat on the cars without the right supporting mods, if your raising boost then you need and intercooler and an updated wastegate to protect the car from the higher levels of heat and boost. You need the right oil and to change it every 3k miles I don't care what anyone tells you, better safe than sorry. If you are questions these things then you are not going to enjoy this car to its fullest potential. I honestly don't know why anyone would purchase this engine in 100 % stock form, I don't find it fun at all. The potential it has after 2k in mods is groundbreaking and incredible!!! I say all these things with respect to your post. I can assure you the chances of your motor going boom is a lot less than not, actually a ton less, but if you aren't willing to chance that no need to move forward, no one is going to sit here and guarantee you everything will be fine like you are asking in your post. Good luck, I really hope you contact Adam and get a tune from him, but before that I would cover all the safety basis, catch can, plugs, oil, fmic and wastegate

I agree 100 % with Damndave above.

As far as mods, A catch can will not damage your engine - Full stop Di Engines are susceptible to valve and intake port coking, Oil reduces octane, and appears to be the major contributor to LSPI. It should be MOD 1 on this motor and should not mess with your warranty.

The stock IC is Garbage, it is inadequate for a stock car in a warm climate, let alone hard driving. and should be done right away. even on the stock tune the feel is worth it. Again should not affect warranty, hell most dealers will not even notice it and if they do only the most shitty will try to blame a failure on that.

The Stock tune is also garbage, most of the blown ecoboosts were on the stock tune. Dave is right that the car is much better with the Cobb ots. Even though I am 100% sure Adam's (or Cobb's for that matter) calibration is better than stock this will void your warranty so it's a personal choice.

I have full bolt-ons, so How I feel about it is fairly clear.

Well said everyone. You are really doing a disservice to yourself by not putting the tune on your car. It will make it much more enjoyable. The engine failures are concerning, but this forum only represents maybe 2 or 5% of the owners. Drive your car and enjoy it. Just don't do stupid crap with it.

You need an intercooler. Catch cans and wastegates are issues for debate. A tune is a massive improvement over stock.

so far cat back and CAI installed. Intercooler hopefully soon.

It just seems odd that people are now saying our turbo puts out too much low end torque when tuned. I don't think anyone would make a tune that would damage the car, but now there seems to be a theme of bigger turbo and moving the torque curve. IF that is true, should a stock turbo tune move the curve then?

Honestly on the outside, a tune (low end torque) seems to make this a great "street car"/DD and quite enjoyable for those conditions. But now people are saying otherwise.

Also, Catch can, one or two?

All in all, just trying to have a little clarity as many of the engine threads water down quickly and there are a lot of varied comments and reasons that get latched on to which really doesn't help...

Many debates on this forum about catch cans. I personally don't have one. As far as the torque curve, I believe Adam moves his curve more to the right.

Thanks, no ill taken by your post. I know a wastegate was a performance option, but this is the first time I heard it was also safety.

Pretty sure it's only for performance. But I don't doubt it's made of higher quality internals than the stock option. Regardless, the wastegate isn't why any motors have blown.

Just do intake and exhaust and wait a while for the tune until things get better sorted.
Things are plenty sorted out. I really don't understand why this is all that M6G talks about now. You had Adam put out his thread detailing how to maintain your EB safely and he pretty much covers all the bases in that. You can put any quality aftermarket intake (except engine-bolted), exhaust, IC, suspension parts, etc that you want on the car. The only seemingly specific idea is to have a high quality check valve (Boomba) on your catch can if you're running a PCV gut/big turbo.

When are we going to get away from this blown engine talk? I used to love this forum back in the day...

As soon as it hasn't happened in a week or two. I do agree - this forum was certainly more enjoyable when we could simply discuss cool add-ons, tuning and regular topics.

I considered trading the EBM in for a GT but talked myself out of it today.

Screw it. I'm going to mod my car (intelligently) and enjoy it. If something happens then i'll deal with it.

Well I was looking forward to this thread based on the original post, but then I started reading and it seems to be going down the same path as most other threads I have researched from the past.

We go from basic discussion to detailed info that if you have not been here for two years reading or have previous experience of turbo'd engines you are S.O.L.

I don't understand the concept of telling someone if they don't spend a boatload of money on aftermarket and replace most of the bolted on pieces( all of which I am still currently paying for ) that your car is a piece and you should sell it.

For me I have a 93 LX 5.0 that has Trickflow intake, Trickflow aluminum heads and race cam and and and... that's not what I want in this car.

What I want is to do is tune to where it makes sense on the stock parts and not try to squeeze every HP out with no care for longevity. If that's your desire more power to you. When I have emailed Adam he has been very concise and helpful, I will definitely use him for my tuning in the near future. Hopefully I will start to feeling more comfortable in doing so soon.

As much as many of you dislike the constant blow up threads, so do I. Especially since I just got my Eco and was looking forward to doing some light modding and you get on here looking for good info but have to wade through the constant flow of BS and the owners who have no desire to explain a concept but are quick to flame anyone who doesn't have complete knowledge after being here a couple of weeks.

Now I look forward hopefully to more responses that helpful for us that are new to this type of setup.

Pretty sure if you read just about any car forum you'll get Uneasy about modifying anything. The blown engine threads will die out soon enough just like they always do. I've been on multiple forums over the years and have seen the panic enough that it doesn't really bother me. Iam enjoying my 17k tuned car with no issues at all.
