Hi all, I brought my new to me GT350 home Friday (Through Hurricane Helene on Cup 2’s 😅). One of the three previous owners had painted the calipers orange and it is chipping off on each of the calipers.

I’d like to repaint them red. What is the safest way to strip the remaining paint off? I’ve read brake cleaner/wire brush, paint thinner/wire brush, or just sanding/wire brushing.

Forgive the dirt and grime as I haven’t even had the time to clean her up yet.

I've had some pieces for the house powder-coated at a local shop. While you can study, select and apply paint yourself, I wonder if a business like I went to would be best for prep? And maybe along the way they'd have something to apply.

The place I went to, it was like any paint store: almost limitless options on color and gloss. I understand you'll need something for high temps. This shop would initially strip to bare metal, using whatever chemical process they had, then clean and powder coat.

Or, farm the entire process out. At a show this season, someone had shipped their calipers to a shop he knew of; they did a really nice job (I forget the shop) and shipped the finished items back. He did say the entire process took two weeks.

IMO the R isn't much of a different car, but i'd let them keep the red calipers. They're a snooty bunch.

I have red calipers on the Cayenne GTS and hate them because they are always filthy looking. The grey color on the GT350 calipers is great because it doesn't show dirt as easily.

They make touch up paint or I d send them out to be coated professionally. You ll probably have the same result as the last owner if you do it yourself at some point unless you have experience in prep and paint IMO.

I felt your pain. I bought a 996 GT3 and the PO had the calipers painted yellow to mimic those that come with the carbon rotors. So I went through the exercise and painted them red. Using 2 stage clear was key to the final finish and even though it was the first time I shot anything with it, they came out great and look just as good 4 years later. The biggest PITA was cleaning them in prep for paint.
