Hey folks,

I’ve been experiencing this issue where the chimes (earning if door open when engine on, parking sensors etc..) comes through the backup dash speaker rather than the actual speakers.

It seems completely random, I will drive the car and it will be fine, then the next time, it does it again. I’ve read that it may be to do with the stereo not being on, so I’ve tried ensuring the stereo is on, before switching the car off so that when it starts up again, its on. That didnt work, I then tried starting the stereo before I start the car & that didn’t work.

I had a similar problem on my 2017 Ford Mondeo (Fusion for you American peeps out there), the difference there would be that when I got into the car a message would appear on the sync screen “System off to save battery”. The Start stop wouldn’t work, nor would the heated front screen.

When I took the Mondeo into the Ford dealer about it, they stated it was standard behaviour (despite me never seeing it in the cars previous 3 years life with me. Had it from new).

I then worked out it was to do with low battery.

With the Mustang, obviously it doesnt have Start/Stop, or a heated windscreen, so its less of a problem, more an annoyance. I doubt it’s the battery, I drove from Glasgow to Penrith and it happened the next time I started it up following that drive, which was a mix of normal and ‘spirited’ driving. SO, I dont think its a battery related issue, especially as the Battery gauge more often displays a higher voltage when it misbehaves.

Has anybody ever gotten to the bottom of it? Is it just a daft wee software glitch?

Hello,

I had the same thing happening today. The car is six months old on the OEM battery.
The battery is well maintained and when the car is not in use for more than a couple of weeks is hooked to a battery charger.
The car sits inside all of the time.

I used the car two days ago last time and didn't had any problem, today I pick her up to go the car wash and there I find the message. For me it's an absolute first.
I saw it a few times, every time I opened a door to wipe pooled water, when I went to fill her up...

The symptoms are exactly as yours. The car cranks very fast, I don't see the typical sings of a failing battery.
I updated all my car ECUs this February and the body ECU few weeks ago with latest calibration so I don't know if it's a software issue.
I'll be doing some troubleshooting this evening and will report back, also because I need the car in good working order for a trip I want to do in a couple of weeks.

My 18 has done this randomly since I have had it. Just sounds different but not an issue to me. I would guess it is a software glitch.

I'll be very interested to hear the results of your troubleshooting.

I dont think it is the battery, on some occasions its happened (only the chimes, I havent had the same message my Mondeo displayed), the battery has a higher level (according to the digital gauge) than on occasions that it has behaved!

It does seem very random at times. For example, I drove a 150 round trip on Monday, spirited driving as well, it was misbehaving after that drive!

This is also a common problem in my F150 Raptor. Haven’t had it my Mach 1 (yet)……The “fix” on the Raptor forum, which actually worked well for me was a BCM reset via a battery disconnect.

Disconnect the battery, hold positive and negative terminals together for about 1 min to discharge capacitors, wait 5 min, reconnect battery. Or as an alternative, just disconnect battery for 15-20 min.

No idea if it’ll work with Mustang, but I had this problem intermittently for 6 mo with my Raptor, did the reset and hasn’t been an issue since.

Do you back out of a parking spot/garage?

It may be that the sound is going to the back-up speaker when the car is in reverse.

its only really when I stick her in reverse that I notice if its misbehaving or not. My driveway is being replaced just now so where I park I always have to reverse, but rarely have anything behind me. If I do find myself starting her cold and reversing, it’s mainly the main speakers it comes from, maybe 3 out of 10 times it’s the backup batter.

I can’t find a commonality between instances which is weird. I’m a telecoms engineer by trade, so im used to methodical evidence based localising of faults - this defies that…..pointing more to a software glitch.

On my Mondeo I would get a message on screen as I mentioned in my first post. The fix was to stick the power on, flash the headlights 5 times, pump the brakes 3 times and wait fir the battery icon to flash 3 times. lock the door and leave the car for an hour. This reset the BMS.

Downside was it also reset the battery life.

haven’t tried that in the Mustang because I’m not getting anything other than the chimes out of the backup speaker. I don’t think it’s a battery issue.

I agree….sounds like a BCM issue. These cars have all sorts of weird gremlins.

Every engineer that has ever helped me troubleshoot something electronic always asks….”did you try restarting it,” as a first question….just follow the advice of all your peers. 😂

Weirdly, restarting never works! (Not immediately anyway, maybe if she’s left for a spell…)

I didn’t see it in the other posts, have you tried a BCM reset?
how do you reset the BCM?

I do have the elm cable and forscan. (I’ll need to renew the license of course)

I’m just making a semi-educated guess, but based on my experience with my F150, I feel like this will resolve it for you. If you don’t want to renew your Forscan license the battery disconnect method works fine. (At least in the F150, and I can’t imagine the Mustang is any different.)

The license was the free one, the 2 week one, easy enough to renew, providing that allows this reset?

I don't use Forscan (probably should), but yes my understanding is it allows for module resets including BCM. Otherwise, the quick and easy was is to use the method I described in post 5. That is what I did, and worked to resolve the issue for me.
