When I got done the hole was pretty ugly and not exactly round, I should have put a metal plate over it for future access but I patched it with some fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. My biggest mistake was not buying a metal trans pan, to replace the plastic one, with a drain plug in it when I had the plastic one off.
A 2" hole saw might have been a good drill solution. That way there are 2" plugs you can get off of Amazon to plug the hole, like floor drain plugs. That may not be an option solution however, as the location you mention may be close to a high heat generating catalytic converter.

A high end car should have both. An electronic readout can go bad but I have yet to see a dipstick stop working. Granted that most people who have expensive cars will not go under the hood to check their oil but until we replaced my wife's Mercedes with a new car I checked the oil all the time. Car manufactures have gone too far to make things easy at the expense of making them unreliable and costly to fix. I watched a video the other month showing how it cost $5K to replace a taillight assembly that had water get into it and short out computer modules and the system that warns you if you are too close to something. It use to cost $1.35 to replace a bulb.
I have to say that most people nowadays don't know the difference between a oil dipstick, or a spark plug. Hell, allot of people don't even know cars have engine oil or transmission fluid.
