So are the codes cleared and is the car now running normal?
Would one plug running .02 different cause a miss-fire? I know plugs cause missfires, I just assumed it would need to be a little more out of gap than that.
No way, that's within the margin of error. Did the shop say it all looks good except for that?
Sorry guys I was at work when I was writing my last comment and I had to run out of the room for a call.

so to answer your questions:

the codes are cleared now. the mechanic believes it has to do with the tune from Whipple. he told me when I do a cold start to see if there is black smoke coming out. that will tell him there is to much fuel being pushed in the system. don't get me wrong I didn't buy a GT and throw a Whipple 2.9 in it for fuel mileage. but I have gone from 23 miles per gallon to 13. I just figured with the whipple, you have to feed it. the mechanic flipped when I told him my mileage. again the tune is messed up... the tune is locked. so my mechanic can do very little for it.

my mechanic said the one plug being off by .002 was not enough in itself to cause a code or misfire.

so I was told to check for the black smoke at start up, if not run the car the way I did which threw the light the last two times. basically WOT and go through the gears. ill be "testing the car" tonight when I go home in the morning.

if it goes again, you can bet ill be on the phone with Mike and Jeff at Whipple. I have heard nothing but good things about the customer service with Whipple. my mechanic has been having a hard time getting answers from these guy. so if it codes again, plugs have been checked, everything is to speck. my mechanic went over the install for three hours again today and did two dyno runs. we will see in the morning...

yes that was done also today... im about to head out for home and going to "run the speed limit" winky winky to see if hitting the gears and redlining it out will cause the check engine light again

I asked about that and my mechanic said the kit had the plugs pre-gapped…

Thanks Guys
Got my baby back. the mechanic assured me the plugs had been sized when they did the install, but he pulled them again and made sure they were at .028. one plug was at .030 but the rest were at .028. there was also a code of a misfire when the car was started. it has been starting ruff. like is was starving for fuel.

the mechanic
Here is a problem, your mechanic has told 2 different things here in regards to plug gap that contradict each other. Unless you got it wrong, I would not be able to trust his work anymore. The problem with installers that don't tune the car is they don't feel responsible to fix it when you have drivability issues. We hear all the time here the first thing out of installers mouth is the calibration is wrong when you say it's not running properly.

You have to imagine from Whipple's stand point they literally have thousands of S550's running this calibration without issue. Your mechanic pointing the finger a Whipple calibration is weak, and is his way of saying either buy my calibration or by by!

And as far as gas mileage... 13 is not bad :) I average about 11MPG. Unless you're doing mostly highway driving, I'd say 13 is right in that average area.

From personal experience, I will tell you that installers can be quick to blindly blame a tune. I am not trying to say this person is lying to you. I am just saying that it is much easier for them to blame something that they cannot control, and or, change. The tune always seems to be the "go to" source of the problem. Unless, that same shop has custom tuned your vehicle. In that case, they aren't anywhere near as quick to blame the tune. Just my $.02 for what it's worth.

Wow, I'm blown away right now. I tried to call my mechanic about my car today and his phone went to voice mail. I called nearly all day left messages and nothing. I figured he was pissed I keep calling. I decide to look at my dash cam to see how long he had to work on it. I have the K1S dual front and back dash cams, which has motion detection. I know the mechanic knew they were in the car because when they replaced my shifter they had to remove some of the wires and put them back in the center console. I found out all this work and dyno pulls he did and gapping the plugs was all bullshit!

He had my car all day. Said he worked on it almost all day and was on the phone with Whipple techs for hours, but they were so dumb they couldn’t figure out the problem. He tells me he finally figured it out but it took a lot of work and he got it all straightened out.

Video showed me pulling up. He comes out to the car, checks the code and clears it. We shake hands and my wife picks me up. The car is pulled into one of his bays and sits for 4 hours. People come and go. Few people comment about the nice looking white mustang. The answer given by the mechanic was, “yeah it’s nice but a bitch cop owns it and he can’t drive, so it keeps throwing engine check lights and he expects me to fix it all the time.”

I was always very respectful, never pushy, never argued any prices. As a matter of fact each time I picked up my car I would walk in his office handing him my Debit card.

There was no dyno pulls, the hood was never lifted, never placed on a lift. As for the test drive… that was the mechanic taking my car for a 7 mile round trip to pick up Carl’s Jr through a drive through; while he was on his cell phone the entire time telling his wife about the bitch cop back again with his car with a check engine light on and how noisy the Whipple fans are.

he gets back to his shop and parks the car in the stall i picked it up from. so other then clearing the codes and taking my car to lunch, no work was done. Nothing like hearing a guy who worked on your car calling the car a piece of shit after you put nearly five grand in his pocket for a job he signed up to do.

Whipple, well that took me all of 20 seconds to get a hold of Jeff. Jeff spent the better part of an hour going over stuff about my kit and he sent me the flight controller, he is having another tune put together from the techs at Whipple so I can take it to JBA… since my FORMER mechanic never gave me a copy of the tune. So, next week ill be taking it to JBA having them do a dyno and tell me what is really going on.

Whipple, KICKS ass I really happy with their customer service.

Okay rant over…

I can't stand crap like that from business' which is why I like doing my own wrenching. I realize not everyone can do that (time/tools/experience) and I'm the one who appreciates it when my friends need me to do some work on their cars and take pride in that trust. Please let us know what the next place gets worked out and wishing the best of luck for you.

Mannnnn... That's just TERRIBLE. I am very sorry to hear that. My guess then is that he probably has never checked those dam plugs, ever..? That is some serious disrespect. I wish you luck with the future shop. Maybe they will actually DO something.

Who did the crank relearn? You or the "mechanic"?

That would piss me off, I'd be making a trip there that's for sure. Considering your a cop you could have a little fun....

Really sorry to hear that, but I was on to something when he said the plugs come pre gapped and then told you later he checked them and all were within spec...bullshit, is easy to see. My bet is all you need is to gap the plugs to .028 and all will be golden. Wow what an embarrising story, maybe you should show him his excellent service and customer care technique.

Yup and crank relearn for sure. That bozo probly didn't follow the directions to well.

You need to start patrolling his neiborhood, and make sure he is being lawful:paddle:

that was for the Whipple 2.9 install with all the upgrades, 10 rib belt, Clutch, Fly wheel, Sway bars front and back, drive shaft, bushings, and ford racing half shafts. he told me 3 days. took a week and a half. he may have had it done in a few days and was maybe driving my car around; who knows...

he did crack relearn, supposedly. ill be doing myself after talking with Jeff at Whipple. he sent me the Flight Control and ill be getting the tune in a day or two. if that doesn't fix things, JBA will take over.

Jeff thinks after my tune was put in the mechanic tried to get into the tune. Jeff said shops try to get into the tune to copy for other customers, but Whipple tunes are encrypted. once it is messed with it gets corrupted, so the mechanic may not have my tune and that is why he was pointing fingers at Whipple and just clearing the codes....

as for "selective enforcement patrol in the area..." not worth my career. it is his lose. i have 54 Deputies in my unit i run and five have 550s. mine is the test car. so far everything i got, most have gotten or are saving to get. he lost the business.

ill just move on. i just want my baby running right so i can enjoy driving her again... ill keep you posted.

i dont want to name names, because i know some members here have used this guy. i dont want to get into a he said she said back and forth with any members. i value my membership here and all the advise i have received. im not some ***** that backs away from an argument, but i now if i get going, ill be banned. :paddle:

all im willing to say is if you are going to have a SC installed in a shop in south san diego and it is not JBA, you may want to think twice...

thanks for the support.
