Charge phone from USB port

While driving today, with my S4 linked by Bluetooth, it ran out of battery. So I tried to plug the phone into the USB port to charge it. The system seemed to search the phone, found an old message, and kept playing it back. When the message was over, a 'warning' beep kept sounding. So I couldn't charge the phone. What am I doing wrong here? Should I have disabled the bluetooth before trying to charge? Searched and found no similar question. Thanks in advance.

If the phone died you probably need to give it a few minutes to get a good enough charge for full functionality or your MFT was glitching. Bluetooth should not make a big difference so you might want to try it again to confirm.

Maybe it's not the problem, but the charge current on the usb port alone is pretty low. I tested it, and my phone only drew 0.5 amps on it. I know my phone will charge on 0.5A, but it'll do it very slowly. I just keep a small usb 2 amp cigarette socket charger. My phone will draw 1A from that just fine.

But I plugged my phone into USB, and it did the same thing. I don't store any music on my phone, and it just played whatever sound file it found on the phone. In my case it was just text message sounds.

When I plug my galaxy s5 into the USB port, it changes from charging to not charging over and over again. I now keep a 12v to USB adapter in my car and it charges fine off of that. Supposedly this car has 2.1A USB ports.

Mine does this too, I was thinking I could play music through it but it wouldn't let me. I know I can use Bluetooth but sometimes my phone acts up and goes in and out of BT. Just seems weird that it wont play whatever audio is playing on the phone through the car like you would think.

Edit: Well let me clarify, it was playing music through only the stock media player on the phone (which I never use). I wanted it to play through my Google Play Music. IDK why it would play through one but not the other.

I went out and tried this port, sure enough my phone charged fine so you are correct.

You can also turn off autoplay in the settings. That will disable the system from trying to play music when you plug a phone in.

My phone shows that it's charging when it's plugging into the front USB port under the HVAC controls (Droid charging icon on top of the battery symbol) but it doesn't charge and actually loses charge...

Mine is Premium and none of my USB ports are 2A capacity.

I found that I had to use a 12V to USB adapter also.

I use a large tablet for work. It requires 1+ amp current. I tried both USB ports to keep it charged without success. I have a USB power output tester. I could only get about 0.5 amps out of either socket, neither close to the rated 2+ amps. I subsequently have been using a similar 12V to USB plug. Plenty of power to keep the tablet running.

I'll have to get a 12v to usb plug as well. Making a 1700 mile road trip and definitely need my GPS.
