The cost for full headers w/labor vs just cutting out the cats is a huge difference. Just how much of an advantage would complete headers be given I don't plan on a fi setup any time soon but I do plan on a custom dyno tune.

Is it even worth entertaining the idea of going catless w/out doing full headers?

Headers are where you will gain most of the power, catback is minimal. If you see the stock headers vs some nice long tubes it shows the obvious, long tubes will gain you 20-40hp with tune. But if you just want the sound of it then have the cats cut out and is much cheaper.

I get all of that, but is doesn't address my question -- is there a significant enough gain to warrant removing the cats from the oem setup. I already have a cat-back setup. To get the cats removed and new pipe welded in will only be less than $200. To purchase and install headers is about 10 times that price.

Power is in the collector along with the piping size. The factory 2 1/4" exhaust is already a flaw in the system.

Do it right and gain the power!!

I am sure removing the cats themselves and replacing them with test pipes, straight through pipes, tubes, or whatever you feel like calling them, will render a nice power increase. You would have to get the car tuned as well since the sensors would be all over the place without the cats. This all while keeping the same pipe diameter, although I am not debating bigger gains can be achieved by larger diameter piping and removing cats.

You will get nothing except pollution and strong smell removing the converters. :frusty:
If I was worried about that I wouldn't be asking about it.... smh

Here is one example of a test. It is from Kenne Bell;they tested one mod at a time to see the difference.

RWHP TEST
279 - Stock baseline
750 - MAMMOTH™ 2.9H Kit
775 - Bassani cat back
775 - Remove exhaust
775 - Custom x pipe
775 - Remove x pipe
775 - Remove cats
775 - Install 1-3/4” headers
775 - Install cats
775 - Install gutted cat pipes w/headers
775 - Install stock x pipe
775 - Install custom x pipe
750 - Reinstall stock exhaust

You are correct though, I have seen test that show 2- 5 HP and my guess is the CAT was getting old or a bad manufacturing process.

That's logical:headbonk:why care about anything else except yourself.

Don't get me wrong, i am no tree hugger and believe the science behind "Global Warming" is more political than seeking to save humanity, but some devices actually do as they were designed.

I just don't see the point in removing an item that the data shows it clearly works for for converting hazardous gases into harmless gases and has almost null effect on HP.

Thoughts?

How much have you seen by removing only the converters?
I believe their results were based on tune. Stock for stock, remove your cats and compare to a baseline dyno, I am sure you will see a difference.
