Has anyone ever used a carbon fibre skinning company in the UK? I don't know much about skinning, but it seems that's where you send them your OEM piece and they layer on top real carbon fibre. Seems like you can do it for most interior and exterior pieces. There's like 10 shops on Google. Anybody ever done this before?

Doesn't that defeat the entire objective, instead of making it lighter your making it heavier (Steel panels + weight of fiber*area + any other required martial it needs) - unless the car is just for show? then that would be a cheaper way of doing it.

It's just for show. Do the carbon interior bits of Ferrari or Porsche really make the car so much lighter that a driver can tell? It's just to make it look pretty.

Unfortunately because of all the fake carbon even real carbon now looks tacky. A lot of people don't even incorporate the carbon into their design, so the carbon parts stick out like when you've had a crash and grabbed the first parts you can afford from the scrappy and none of the colours match.

I don't necessarily disagree with you despite having carbon on my car. Years ago, when cars were first accessorized with carbon, I thought it looked like cheap plastic. Then I kind of started to like it. Next when matte carbon came out, I then thought that looked like cheap plastic. I now am sort of in a happy medium. I've tried to make sure that the carbon parts on my car have a weave pattern that matches. For example, the steering wheel has the same carbon pattern on the inserts around the buttons as the wheel itself. All the exterior carbon is by the same company, Anderson, so again the weave pattern is all consistent.

As for hydro-dipped carbon and wraps, I agree it has sort of "cheapened" real carbon fiber. That said, when you do see real carbon, the 3-D effect usually makes it so you can tell the difference. I can say that when I saw the carbon bonnet for my car (different thread, it was not installed 'cause it was damaged in shipping) it was quite a piece of kit and really stood out as something special, not just a vinyl wrap.

Gloss carbon does look good in the sunlight and it's not an effect easily caught on camera :sunglasses:

'Forged' carbon seems to be all the rage now, but I've had it on my push bike since 2015 !

Back then it was referred to as unidirectional carbon, but that doesn't sound as cool as forged ... :giggle:

Other than the odd bit :

I have resisted carbon on the mustang and don't foresee a problem with me continuing to do so although after being in a CFTP, I could have been very tempted with an OE carbon dash - if they did them in RHD ... (and the wheels - if cost and fitment wasn't an issue lol).

Although my bike and some bits of my other car are gloss, in general I do favour matt carbon and I now use it for most of the odds and sods I mess around with :

And I do have a carbon ring 💍

Personally, I have no interest in skinning an existing component - for me it's 'real' or 'no deal' ... :like:

Trufiber makes RHD real replacement carbon interior stuff. I think they have pretty good reviews.

Any carbon I install will be a replacement for heavy body parts like bonnet, wings, doors, trunk lid etc and will be painted as I'm going for the black/guard subtle OEM look.

Actually my carbon fiber drive shaft is unpainted but then no one sees 😂
