A lot of you guys are track junkies. What kind of setup do you run to record track video/audio/GPS data overlay? I'm just looking to see what's out there as far as apps, products etc.

I've got a gopro hero4 and debating getting Harry's Lap Timer but since I haven't invested in much now is a good time to get more info.

This is my setup:

Main Gear:
Camera = GoPro Hero4 Black
External Microphone = Olympus ME-51s
OBDII Adapter = OBDLink MX Bluetooth
Software = RaceRender3 - Ultimate Edition + Included app on my phone

Accessories:
- External Mic Adapter for GoPro
- 25ft Microphone cable extension
- RAM Mount Suction Cup Mount + GoPro Adapter + Skeleton Housing Case for GoPro


I mount the microphone in my trunk and run the wire through the rear seats to plug into the GoPro that I usually mount to my back window. I'm still testing proper mounting positions and also have a mount for my helmet. I'm not sure which one I like better yet but I'll try a few other ways this year.

I use the OBDLink app to record all of the telemetry from a run and export that into a .csv file to the computer. Then I use RaceRender to overlay the data onto the GoPro video to add in the gauges. The hardest part is trying to sync the data up with the video but RaceRender makes it relatively easy. It's just a little time consuming when you're first trying to get the hang of it.

Here's the last video I shot with this method while I was still testing the camera positions. I used my friend's GoPro Hero3 White on my rear window and mounted my Hero4 to my helmet to see the difference between them.

If you want more of an accurate lap timer you should also get an external gps module, The ones used in cell phones are just to slow for high speed driving.

I like the helmet mount, makes the viewer feel like its them driving and it looks like you're going faster.

I use Harry's lap timer on my iPhone. The only drawback is I haven't yet found a phone mount that is stiff. I've tried four brands and they all vibrate. I may make my own adapter to a go-pro mount since those seem to be pretty robust.

I have a QStarz Q818XT but I can't use that if I already have my phone hooked up to the OBDII adapter. If only you could have 2 bluetooth connections at once. I might see if I can either find an older phone to hook up to the external GPS or just get this Q1000XT with data logging to simplify things. I should have bought this one to begin with but I bought it long before I ever even thought about track days. It was mainly for hiking and bike riding.

Exactly! I've tried all kinds of stuff but the only thing that works for me is fully automatic with no Pre or post production required. I get in the car and go. Literally nothing to forget unless you forget a memory card but today's cards will hold multiple weekend of video. To that end, Aim smartycam works. I bought a used HD version. My audio is bad because i haven't adjusted the gain and it's not a GT350, but it is a 3,700lb, 8000 rpm mustang on Street tires :cheers: :cheers:

I'm in the same boat, I'm trying a couple different RAM mounts
If I can't fix the video jello effect with the iphone 7, I might switch back to my iphone 5?

Love how good your sound is...no wind noise and the car sounds great. U like the view forward from the rear window mount. Do you put the end of the mic outside the trunk and then capture the wire when you shut the trunk lid? And are you using AutoBlip or blipping the throttle yourself? Thanks much.

I put the mic inside my trunk almost dead center and I have it covered in a thin layer of cheap foam to minimize the noise from it moving around. I think I'm going to move it closer to the license plate but still keep it inside the trunk for my next outing.
