Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I didn't see it.

My big question on this is... they only pulled 0.83g on the skidpad? That's less than Car and Driver got out of, just to give a few examples, a 2014 Kia Forte; a 2014 Chevy Impala; a 2013 Dodge Dart; a 2015 Subaru Legacy; and a 2013 Buick Verano.

What in the world is up with that? I understand that the test was done on all-season tires, and that it's not the performance pack suspension, but... seriously? A GT Automatic doesn't have the lateral grip of a Chevy Impala?

they expained it:
Quote:
"Even on the automatic’s loose set of Pirelli P Zero Nero all-season tires, the GT is able to get out of the hole as quick as the stick running the optional summer rubber. We saw 60 mph pass in 4.5 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.0 seconds at 113 mph, identical to the manual’s times. Still, the low-grip rubber prevented recording anything better than a 0.83-g skidpad run, far less than the 0.95 posted by the last stick-shift car we tested on the summer Pirelli P Zeros. "

this is the answer to all those tire-questions:
can i go on winter tires all year?
what about driving all season tires all year?

so get the proper set of tires and you will get proper results

btw: any idea what lateral g numbers this set of tires will deliver?

Exactly. All it is is a set of wheels and tires. The stockers are 18x8.5s. Did you look at their 0 to 60 for an automatic? I mean maybe you all are jaded but a mid 4s 0 to 60 automatic is a frickin fast car. I mean that was a supercar 10 years ago. And the one they tested didn't even have 3.55s. This makes me feel great about my GT base purchase. I mean a set of new wheels and tires and thats it. Infact all you would have to start off with is changing the P Zero Nero All weathers with the P Zero Nero Z rated tires. Pirelli should have never introduced P Zero all weathers anyway. They only used to use the P Zero name for Z rated tires. Then they diluted it. My 05 GT had the summer P Zeros and I loved them even though they arent supercar summer tires or anything.

It is nice to see that the auto and manual both run about the same 0-60 and 1/4 miles times. Still do not understand the lack of PP for autos but oh well.

The automatic GT with 3.55s is a beast. I absolutely love mine! :D
Yup that's mine really soon. And I got the base so we're talking 100 less pounds or so than the GT Premium they tested. And mine will have the 3.55s. I'm expecting mid to LOW 4s now without many mods. And a high 12s quarter.

I saw the article a few days ago and also thought it sounded strange. Also, maybe I missed it but did they explicitly say what set of tires/rims they had on the car they tested? base 18's or the premium 19's?

Those are base 18s. You can tell by looking at the pictures alone. Thats also the standard wheel on GT and GT Prems with no PP or appearance pack so it makes sense.

Sorry guys, but....

I doubt any of those other grocery getters had Ultra high-performance tires. I doubt some even had 18's with A/S. That's embarrassing

^^^ This exactly.

Saying "oh it's just the all-season tires" is negated by the fact PLENTY of non-performance cars on all-season tires tested better on the skidpad. I'll put it to you this way: the Mustang GT's skidpad number was lower than that of the 1.0 liter 3-cylinder Ford Fiesta. Not the Fiesta ST -- the base Fiesta. WITH STABILITY CONTROL ON!

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2014-ford-fiesta-10l-ecoboost-sedan-test-review

That Fiesta is running 185/60-15 Hankook Optimo all-seasons and pulled a 0.84. The Mustang GT tested by Car and Driver is running 235/50-18 Eagle F1 Asymmetric all-seasons, and pulled a 0.83.

Um... what's the deal?

Yeah very good points, I totally agree with you. Doesn't it suck living in NY and needing an auto? LOL. My 2012 GT is my FIRST auto...I so much miss the fun and control of a stick shift, but the auto is heaven in traffic, which is what I deal with 98% of the time commuting on the LIE every day. I just couldn't take the torture of a standard, day in and day out, in bumper to bumper traffic any more. Especially being my previous car was a H/C/I full exhaust Z06 with an HD clutch.

The econobox argument always makes me laugh. It means absolutely nothing in the scheme of driving your car in normal conditions that a car that takes 7 seconds to get to 60 and runs a quarter mile in 15 seconds can achieve high skid pad. Read my lips it means jack squat aka nothing. Its always a combination of power class and handling. The nut commenter on the Car and Driver article who keeps going on and on about the Golf seems to lack that general awareness. His car even in GTI form would be stomped out of existance up and down every road in normal driving conditions in this country by the same GT Mustang with the softer base suspension. I mean its not kinda faster, its an order of magnitude faster than the GTI. Thats why he keeps trying to deflect to his Golf R as a backup. Not even released yet.
