Hey all

Just looking at all season tyre choices for standard UK fitment - 255/40/19 and 275/40/19. The choice is pretty dire.

Having a fiddle around the sizing filters online, it would appear that a 55 profile in those sizes is the sweet spot.

My GT isn't lowered and doesn't have any spacers. Could I get away with 255/55 and 275/55 or would it rub / catch?

Thanks.

Are 27.03" (686mm) and 27.66" (702mm) tall.

255/55 and 275/55
Are 30.04" (763mm) and 30.91" (785mm) tall.

I doubt these will fit without MASSIVE rubbing.
Maybe a narrower tire in a 55 series? Even a 225/55 is 28.7" tall.
Unless you are going to an 18" wheel, which you didn't mention.

Do more research. Good luck.

Thanks! Yeah I'd need to pop these on a spare set of wheels which I hadn't looked into yet. I see, so a set of 18" alloys would help negate the higher tyre.

And for another comparison, the base GT comes with a 235/50R18 tire.

Ahh I did not know that. Awesome. Sounding like 18" might be the way forward here.

Better make sure the brakes are small enough to fit 18"s. Does the car have the big Brembo brakes?

Yeah there’s a few 18” wheels that fit over the Brembos but not many. Apex and Race Star are the two that come to mind. The above threads should have some good info as well.

Just get conti in /40 profile.
You don't have "weather" anyway. 😄

OP - try to match the current tire diameter - anything different affects your gearing (those initial sizes were insanely tall, not even mentioning the look - which would be ridiculous and potential rubbing) and speedo. That substantial of a profile change will also affect how the car drives / handles.

What kz said is good. Generally as long as you’re within 3% (bigger or smaller) of the original tire diameter you’re still ok. Anything more than that tolerance is when the gearing and speedo start getting out of whack. I went from 235/50R18 to 285/35R20 which is about 2% difference.

Thanks all for the help. Yeah so stock size, there just isn't much choice.

  1. Bridgestone Weather Control A005 Evo which comes last out of 15 tyres in this review here.
  2. Conti AllSeason Contact (as @shogun32 suggests) which seems like a generally "OK" all rounder in this review here.
Being in the North of the UK the main change in weather here is just cold temperatures, ice, wet / slush. If we do get snow it's only for a few weeks. So an All Season tyre that handles better in the cold and damp is preferable over any outright snow performance, but, I'm guessing any snow performance would still be ahead of a UHP summer tyre.

I'd love the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 but that only goes up to 255/40/19. Perfect for the front. It is the rear that is the issue.

I'll get my thinking cap on.

It looks like going to a 20" wheel might work. Would this be acceptable / safe to use? I'm not going to crash wildly or upset the handling with these sizes? 😁 Going to 255/35/20 and 315/35/20 means I could fit Vredestein Quatrac Pro tyres (which I've had experience with before on other cars).

Thanks again.
