Most people say the stock airbox is just as good as any aftermarket CAI... theyre probably right.

My personal opinion; theyre all actually "Hot air intakes" unless you've got a closed box.... So if you HAVE to have one, Id say the Injen, the Roush, the Steeda, etc, with a closed box is the way to go.

I have the Roush, mostly because its CARB certified; I dont live in Cali, but im in NY so if the cops ever do make me pop the hood, theres nothing to worry about.

Plus I like the idea that you need a tune to run it without the insert... makes me feel (or gives me the illusion) that it makes a difference...
Left out the insert on mine, 93 race tune... definitely livened up the car. How much of that if any is the CAI is anyones guess, but most people dont even know what an intake is, so it sounds pretty badass when I tell them "I have a Roush intake" 😎

Pretty much all the intakes available for these are closed boxes, even the ones that have no "lid" still seal against the fiberglass hood blanket which is a fantastic insulator. What makes the stock intake so good is the thickness of its plastic. Takes longer for heat to move through it.

Steeda claims to have the highest flowing closed box intake.

Yea I saw that one... tempting... "TUNE REQUIRED" :sunglasses:

Not CARB legal though. I've seen too many videos of people running afoul of the wrong cop and getting threatened with an impound or at least a trip to the state ref. (Probably all in California)

Hasn't happened to me yet here in NY, but over the next 5-10 years who knows what will change. They don't exactly love gas burning V8s here.

New to the mustang.

Why do you need a tune with just an intake? I've been modding cars for a long time and never had to do that. Also, I'm surprised to not see anyone mention the JLT intake. There's evidence of real gains on the dyno with that intake

I have the new-ish closed lid JLT. Fit and finish is amazing, and plastic is thiccc. I have not yet seen a drastic jump in IAT that would not be expected in this Phoenix heat.

I wouldn't live in Commiefornia if I got paid millions of dollars a year just to do so.

MAF based cars have a set mathematical formula for the tube they're installed in. When you drastically change the dimensions of this tube, it can cause issues. You can also get issues if the flow rate is much higher than the expected variance of the stock intake. The computer will think something bad is happening and put you in limp mode or otherwise shut the fun down.

Stick with the stock airbox and thrown in a K&N filter. Most tuners will recommend sticking to the stock airbox unless you are pushing of those last 5 ish hp.

Key point right there...on the dyno.

With the hood up and a big ass fan blowing air directly into the engine bay sure you'll see some power. With the hood down and driving around you won't see anywhere near the same gains. So if all you care is about dyno numbers, it's probably the intake for you. If you care about performance, and most importantly performance per dollar, it's not even close.
