Breaking it in

When we receive our mustangs can we just get in them and "Floor" the gas pedal as everyone did in the review videos, or do we have to wait and slowly break them in?

I ask because I know on some performance vehicles they're semi broken in at the dealership.

I know alot of cars you must 1000miles and then slowly start breaking it in.

Drive it how you would normally. Do not keep the RPM at one spot for too long, mix it up. (No long trips on the hwy at the same speed)

yeah, it looks like break-in for these engines are pretty easy.

i followed the guidelines below on the last car i broke in and oil consumption is less than a half a quart after 80k miles. of course it's a totally different engine (4 cylinder boxer, turbocharged)

When I got my 1.6 Ecoboost brand new, I was advised to vary speeds and don't rev too high for the first 1000km or so. And check oil ofc. In my case, it didn't even use that much oil from the start.

With my 05GT, I picked it up on a Friday night and went out to dinner near my house. The next morning, with 125 miles on the clock, I took it out and bounced it off the rev limiter and hit redline more in 3hrs than I did my previous Mustang (96 GT) in 4 years I figured if it was gonna break, let's break it under warranty! It now has nearly 120K on the clock with only 1 major engine issue at around 75K miles (broken cam follower).

Am I missing something with this article? I don't see any info other that what's in the owners manual. The only recommendation I see from that article is to not take your brand new engine into stop and go traffic. Although, stop and go traffic seems to satisfy the owners manual requirements quite well.

Was there more than just the one page?

In any case, I typically follow the owners manual recommendations as much as is reasonable.

basically what I got out of it was, don't go WOT until 100 miles, and vary speeds until 1000

that will be pretty easy for me, since i drive 100 miles on one workday. so i guess ill be able to WOT on my way home, or on the 2nd day.

Purely peace of mind and throwing your money away to get it changed before your first scheduled change.

Like the other poster said, not necessary any longer.

Years ago, it was necessary to remove the fine chips of metal from parts wearing in during break in. Specifically the flat tappet cams. Now, with roller cams and better machining and filter tech, it's not needed like in history.
